iOS 4, the latest version of Apple’s latest mobile software for iPhone and iPod touch, launches later today, ahead of the iPhone 4 release on Thursday. If you’ve got one of Apple’s babies already, you’ll be able to start testing out all the new features, like multitasking, iBooks, app folders and more, in just a few short hours. Read on for a rundown of which gizmos get what.

iOS 4(Formerly known as iPhone OS 4) won’t be available for the iPad until the Autumn, and will come preloaded on the iPhone 4 when it goes on sale on the 24th of the month, but Apple is expected to release it free for existing devices globally today – that’s right, no iPod touch tax this time.

iOS 4 packs tons of new features, including long awaited app switching and multitasking, a unified email inbox, intelligent folders for apps, iBooks support, Faces and Places support in Photos and even Bluetooth wireless keyboard support for bashing out super long emails. Anyone with an iPhone 3GS or 32/64GB third gen iPod touch will get the full experience, but certain core elements like multitasking won’t be possible on the iPhone 3G (Our full iOS 4 support guide is here).

iOS 4: The new name for iPhone OS 4

Traditionally, Apple has launched new iPhone OS updates in the later afternoon UK time, and we wouldn’t expect iOS 4 to be much different. Whether we’ll see the similar sort of meltdown as previous years remains to be seen, as iPhone fans all rush at once to grab the update, but you can bet we’ll be queuing up to check out what’s new on each and every supported device nonetheless. In the meantime, prep yourself by downloading iTunes 9.2 right now.
