The Nintendo 3DS just keeps getting more intriguing. Yesterday, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata teased plans to follow it with a Wii 2 3D and now he’s talking up Nintendo 3DS ebook reader skills that could take on the iPad and Kindle. It’s all down to the Nintendo 3DS’s new Wi-Fi smarts…

Talking to Nikkei, Iwata expanded on Nintendo 3DS details revealed in the Nintendo E3 keynote: “As you carry it with you while out and about, it will seek out and automatically connect with wireless LAN spots and download information.”

We already knew that the Nintendo 3DS will be able to communicate with other Ninty kit like the Wii over Wi-Fi even when it’s slumbering but that connectivity could also be put to other use.

Iwata describes a possible ebook reader feature that Nintendo is currently toying with. He says: “We’re thinking about functionality where it will automatically acquire newspaper and magazine articles.”

It’s not clear whether the feature would make it to the UK. As Adriasang points out, the current Nintendo DS already automatically downloads information and mini games at selected locations in Japan.

The Nintendo DSi already introduced an ebook reader but we’d still like to see this kind of service come to the UK along with that rumoured 3DSWare app store.

Let us know: should Nintendo add an automatic ebook reader feature to the Nintendo 3DS? Or are you just planning on using yours for games?
