The iTunes 9.2 update hit yesterday and it seems some iPod owners are experiencing a few snags with the new software. After the iTunes 9 iPod syncing issues, last year, once again it looks like the iPod Classic that’s suffering. Read on for info on iTunes 9.2 hitches and to let us know how you’re finding the new version of Apple’s jukebox.

iTunes 9.2 is primarily about preparing for iPhone 4 and iOS 4 but it also promises speedier syncing and improvements to Coverflow. However, in this Apple support forum thread and on Twitter, users are reporting that their iPod Classic is refusing to sync and in some cases that the contents of their device has disappeared.

We’ve also found tales of issues with the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch when trying to sync with iTunes 9.2. Some Apple fans have suggested that the problem is caused either by a clash with the third-party iToner ringtone creation app or a snafu with notes syncing.

The Apple support forums are hardly deluged with complaints about iTunes 9.2 but the reports have made us wonder how many other iPod and iPhone users are struggling. Share your experiences with iTunes 9.2 – good or bad – in the comments.

have an itouch & iphone (both 1st gen) that are both pretty much useless as mp3 players since this update. music/ipod app will play one song and crash. plugging in either device will freeze up itunes (windows vista). from past experience with purchasing a mac computer (“3 years later, its obsolete, throw it away and get a new shiny mac product!”) i can only assume this is mac's polite way of telling me if i want to listen to music i need to toss my stuff in a landfill and “upgrade” for several hundred dollars. sure the stuff works great when it works; its the randomly-quits-working-when-apple-releases-a-new-OS that i can't take. screw you apple.

I updated to 9.2 and now I can't add new music. iTunes does not show the CD as a device and does not allow me to import it. I called support who told me to do a clean install of iTunes 9.2. That made absolutely no difference. Afraid to try synching anything.

my itouch has been having problems syncing ever since upgrading. does anyone know how to fix it????

  • Louis

Same problem after iTunes 9.2 update but with iPod Touch first generation.
Running iTunes on Windows. Sync started but it seemed iTunes frooze. After 15 minutes it continued synchronising but it took ages for a few songs. No album art work is messed up on ipod and in iTunes.

  • Kelson

My ipod classic hasn't worked since the iTunes 9.0 update, it stopped the syncing from working. No matter how many times I reset and restore it, it stops working after a few hundred songs

I have just been using itunes 9.2 to play music from my library. lately after playing about 2 to 3 songs itunes stops working correctly and windows prompts to shut it down. I am running windows 7 and just installed the new version of itunes about 2 weeks ago. this is a new computer so it was a fresh installation, not an upgrade.

Apple sucks ass. People who hype their products are clueless. But then again, if you examine how apple really started with the Mac, it was targeting people who needed computers to be extra simple and easy. In other words, people who were not computer literate. Itunes 9.2 is garbage as is their classic line. I have a 120 GB Ipod classic and it is the biggest pile of shit I have ever owned. It skips tracks all the time. Itunes freezes when I try to add new songs. And as far as customer support at apple forget it.

One thing I did discover after Itunes locked up 100% was you can just remove your IPod once you kill Itunes. I was always affraid to do so. But I did and held down the menu button and pressed up (causing it to reboot) and I was fine. In the past, when I have had this problem, I have had my IPod go into restore mode where it is back to factory defaults and it had to reload every single song. Rebooting enabled me to escape that.

    btw I'm running windows 7

I am most likely just going to go back to a older version of Itunes and disable upgrades in the future. They really have brought me nothing but stability issues.

My iPhone 3GS is carrying out a hard reset during telephone calls, only since the installation to 9.2 an the upgrade of the on phone software.

I recently downloaded iTunes 9.2 and it simply freezes, I have to force it out every time I try to open it! If I double click on a MP3 file iTunes launches automatically, I can hear the music but I can't do anything else like browsing the rest of my library or open playlists. I think I'll un install it and go back to the 9.1 version, which was working perfectly fine.

I have 2 logins setup on my Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac 9 Intel). I attempted to update my iTunes from 9.0.2 to 9.2 but oddly the updated version 9.2 shows correctly in one Login but not the other one. The other one still shows 9.0.2 and my iPhone does not synch with this version. Even more odd was everything seemed to work fine with 9.0.2 when I first synched both my iPhones. When iTunes started complaining after a couple of days, I attempted to upgrade to 9.2.

I just updated my iTunes software on my Macbook and now iTunes won's start at all – which is fricking marvellous – any ideas what I can do to fix this?

  • Amika

Mine just started doing this recently. everytime I go to edit an album or whatever it says itunes has stopped working and then closes it! TT__TT

  • TatGK

Lost all my music and movies on my iPod classic. Pretty mad about this because some of the music I'll NEVER get back. I have whatever classic model was for sell in December.

Since I installed the update on my laptop, I suddenly can't connect to the iTunes Store. Instantly get a message that my connection has timed out, Don't have any problems getting in the web – as this comment evidences. I haven't update ITunes on my desktop and don't have any problems acessing the store. And my kids have not updated either and they aren't having any problems. What the hell????

Problems with new update version of itunes: here's the issue, when a track finishs playing it then moves on to play the next track but it also changes the genre (or music type) to (14) …itunes should play the next track not change the genre of music …anyone else notice this problem?

  • Red

The latest glitch I've run into here with 9.2 is that it won't 'open' any mp3 files that are elsewhere on the computer. In other words, double-clicking the file – which always copied it into the iTunes library in the past, doesn't work. I've tried dragging it into the Library sidebar, and that won't work either. Of course, the endless succession of mp4s my kids buy from their store are added no problem. Anybody else notice this??

Can't they offer like an “iTunes Lite” without all of this video and iPhone stuff that's bogging a once great application down, and turning it into a guaranteed color wheel of death generator?

My IPOD touch (3rd generation) wont sync the music now that I updated the itunes software to 9.2. It sync's all my apps and as soon as it gets to the music, itunes freezes until i ctrl+alt+del and end it manually. I even tried erasing all content on my ipod, thinking that was the problem.

  • Cnccola25

My iTunes (9.2.1.4) keeps freezing up in two speicific places that I've found so far. One is when syncing the iPod Nano and the other is when trying to check or uncheck any of the music in the music library (or any of the playlists). Any suggestions on how to fix this?

  • Mantis Death

After updating to 9.2 I've been getting screwed over in the music department, with genre's changing to (##), artwork disappearing, and basically every info field randomly changing to empty or some strange name of something I've never heard before. it's annoying going through a hundred songs that have decided to just change their info to something else.

  • Matzisme

simple. 8g touch, will no recognize. appears that there arent any solutions? apple, save us!

  • pissed off!!!!!!!!

This is bullshit!!!!!! For months now, everytime I plug my classic 160GB ipod into iTunes 9.2.1, iTunes freezes. I have done what people have suggested and just let it “beachball” for a while, but after 30 minutes, still nothing!!!!! I'm getting REALLY pissed off!!!!!!!! I'm running an apple MacBook. WHY THE FUCK HAVEN'T APPLE DONE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS??????????? IT'S POOR FORM!!!!!!!! I'm thinking about smashing all of my apple gear and going back to windows and a sony mp3 player. I never had any problems in the past with those.

  • Al

downloaded the update and my computer locked the desktop and all system windows (home, folders, hard drive)…had to reinstall my OS to get things to work again.
Just plugged in my ipod classic…itunes said it could not read it and i needed to restore it. i did not but it deleted all the music anyway…then tried my ipod nano…it gave the same error and i immediately unplugged. it (thankfully) did not delete those files. thanks apple.

  • Al

i restored the ipod classic that itunes wiped for me. reloaded it and unplugged it for it to tell me there was no music on it. plugged it back in to see that the songs i had loaded now were recognized as “other” instead of music. re-sync'd…now there's just double the “other” memory used and still no music…..thoughts????

Iphone 32G 3gs cannot be detected by itunes 9.2.1

  • Cprdeb1

It will not let me download the newest itunes update for my ipod touch. I cannot add any songs or access the store. this is frustrating as my IPOD is used for everything.

Hi, my iPod touch won't sync at all, i plug it into my laptop, and then it just says “itunes has stopped working”

  • Wsykes

I've had some big problems with the last iTunes update. I'm at 10.0.1 now, but it started one update back.

First off, almost all of my Apps went missing from the “Mobile Applications” folder after the update. I had to re-download all them from the App store. Luckily they honoured my purchase record.

Next, I prefer to view my music in “Album List” mode, but I also like to set it up with all of the little album covers running down the side of the list. This no longer works properly. I'm only seeing about 25 percent of the covers here. I can see them everywhere else; in “Now Playing”, “Grid” and “Cover Flow” views. But I really want to see them down the side of the list.

I've tried throwing out a few albums and re-importing them into iTunes, but the cover art did not appear. I need to have this fixed, as it's an integral part of how I play with my music.
