With the iPhone 4 UK price details filtering out from the networks, we’ve been digging through the deals to pick out the best options for various tech tribes. We’ll be updating this guide when the rest of the iPhone 4 UK networks show their hands. Read on for our pick of the iPhone 4 UK price plans so far…

Early Adopters
If you know you’ll desperately want to get your hands on iPhone 5 when it inevitably arrives next summer and don’t want to face the hassle of buying yourself out of a contract, snapping up an unlocked iPhone 4 directly from Apple could be your best bet. As long as you keep your phone in tiptop condition, you’ll then be able to sell it to partly fund your next iPhone purchase.

Data Hogs
While the Orange iPhone 4 deals still use the term “unlimited data” they’re actually capped at 750MB a month. Meanwhile O2 unlimited data packages are a thing of the past and you’ll need to stump up at least £60 on a 24-month contract for 1GB of data. The Vodafone iPhone 4 tariffs look like the best option if you’re planning on munching through lots of data with 1GB on offer with all of the plans. With music streaming apps like Spotify set for multitasking support with iOS 4, you may just need it.

Text Addicts
If you’re still addicted to texting, there’s plenty of good options to choose from. The O2 iPhone 4 deal offers unlimited texts on all of its tariffs. Vodafone offers unlimited texts on all but its lowest 18-month and 24-month contracts. Meanwhile all Orange iPhone 4 24-month contracts (besides the £30 a month package) include unlimited texts.

Students
The first student loan payment might look like a king’s ransom when it arrives but a steady diet of crisps and booze in the bar quickly makes a dent in it. Students planning to pick up iPhone 4 would be best advised to pull together their pennies and plump for an unlocked iPhone from Apple and then shop around for an affordable SIM-only deal. You could also go for a PAYG iPhone 4 from Orange but that will only save you £19 or £29 on the cost of an unlocked iPhone so you’ll need to be particularly taken with the price plans on offer.

Travellers
If you make a lot of trips to Europe, the Vodafone iPhone 4 UK price plans look like a good option. They’re offering 5MB of daily European roaming data on plans over £40 which should easily be enough to check your emails. Orange offers. If you tend to stray further afield and are out of the UK for months at a time, your best bet is grabbing an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple and sourcing local SIM-only deals.

Do you agree with our recommendations? Or have you spotted anything in the iPhone 4 UK price plan small print that’s got you thinking differently? Let us know what package your plumping for and why.

Does 3G coverage differ between networks?

    • bensillis

It certainly does Chris though it's impossible to make sweeping statements. If you're wondering about the actual reception in your area, the best bet is simply to ask your friends to see what they're getting.

    • ChrisUK1

it's hard to get 3g indoors on O2 (from my experience); you'll get better signal and 3g from Vodafone and Three. I haven't tried Orange. T-Mobile is quite bad all round but nothing's set in stone really… it depends heavily on where you live, surroundings etc etc

I am amazed people have yet to notice that the cheapest way is by going with Tesco.

    Buy the iPhone – £500 for 16 or £600 for 32

    Buy a Tesco sim-only contract for £15.

With that you get – 500 mins, unlimited data, unlimited texts AND you are not tied in so can leave whenever you want. It bests every other carriers sim-only deals! They also use o2's network, no poor signal.

EVERY article I have read seems to have missed this.

    • bensillis

You'll have to cut the card in half Joe – iPhone 4s use micro SIMs.

I agree Joe, didnt know tesco had revealed the cost of iphone 4 Thanx

oranges data package isn't capped!!! you can go over and not get charged for data as long as you dont take the piss!!!

    • Jay

LOL so they are capped then….

  • Jeff Overton

O2 does have the unlimited WiFi included via The cloud and BT OpenZone this may be a concideration.

Personally im waiting for Three to divulge, prob go for the unlocked option.

    I just love iphone 4.

  • Dan

Joes right. There's obviously a lot of people that have bought iPhones direct from apple as the don't want to be dealing with 18/24 month contracts.

I like the tesco idea but I am currently with o2 anyway and am looking to leave as there signal is poor where I live.

Maybe you guys should look into the best alternate tariffs for people not looking to commit to long term deals.

Also I wonder if they will only offer microsims for iphone tarrifs and not other standard ones?

  • Fray_bentos

Virgin mobile pay as you go. £5 per month for 1Gb data…beats any of the other offerings by a long way.

  • Jesus

Once again you miss out tescos sim free deal of £15 PM for unlimited texts and data plus 500 mins and the ability to leave whenever you want.

  • Robert1881

EP need to do a follow up article once more PAYG prices are known from all networks, as judging by all the comments this is a popular topic.
Personally I can't decide just yet, but since it's the white handset I'm after I have time to watch this one pan out as fans scramble for the more popular black version.

    • bensillis

Sure thing Robert, we'd be happy to!

iPhone 4 is such a perfect phone for me but I have an old iPhone version. Should I trade in my old iPhone? or I can upgrade it?

  • MS

Also o2 is the only UK provider to offer Visual Voicemail. While this isn't a big deal for many people, it is nice to have all the features meant for the iPhone. Things like o2 Priority and Orange Wednesdays also have a big impact for some people.

    • James Holland

Fair point MS… it's just a shame that Visual Voicemail has so many problems *because* of O2! I often wait a whole day for it to deliver voicemail to me. I'd rather just dial in than have to wait!

      • bensillis

I'm so puzzled about why it's so difficult for networks. HulloMail does exactly the same thing on my BlackBerry, and it's not dependent on network. On a BlackBerry for goodness sake!

  • rowanallen

Although o2 have introduced these data caps, you do not have to go for the £60 per month contract. You can choose the lowest package with 500mb data and data will be unlimited until October 1st then simply choose a monthly Bolt On. 500mb is £5 and 1gb is £10. You can enjoy 1gb per month for minimum of £30 a month and 1.5gb £35.

Unlimited texts, too. Even if there were only 100 texts included, you could use a data-based app like Whatsapp when these ran dry (which would be pretty quick!) and it uses so little data.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous how much phones are costing these days? I remember the days when you could get the top phones for free if you were on contract! These days we have to pay a crazy amount for the phone, on top of a high priced contract that lasts for usually a minimum of 18 months. What happened!?
