With the iPhone 4 just days away from its UK launch, it’s getting close to crunch time for anyone planning on picking one up: do you opt for a contract or do you do down the Pay As You Go path? Don’t be shy – let us know what you’re going to do to get your hands on Apple’s next iPhone.

We now know that the iPhone 4 will be available both on contract through any of the five major UK networks, as well as on Pay As You Go through at least O2. So that’s two very different options to pick from to start with.

iPhone 4 UK price: What are you willing to pay?

Which will you choose, given that Apple will almost certainly offer up a successor to the iPhone 4 this time next year? Are you willing to stick with the iPhone 4 for 18 months or even two years to get it for free, or at least a reduced price? Or would you rather keep pace with Apple’s release cycle by paying the whole price up front every year via a Pay As You Go option?

Unfortunately we don’t have the prices for either contracts or PAYG just yet, although regarding the latter, we’d expect the iPhone 4 price to be at least as much as O2’s current price for the iPhone 3GS on its Pay & Go service: £449.

Anyway, we’d like to hear what you think. PAYG or contract? Tell us in the comments section below.

Out 24 June | £TBC | Apple

if there is no free phone option on a reasonable tariff (ie: up to £45) then it's definitely pay as you go…

  • pete

currently got a vodafone 18month contract runs out august next year so i recon i will sell my 3gs on ebay and buy an iphone 4 but this will all boil down to the iOS 4 jailbreak and unlock so i can use my vodafone simcard , and the normal sim will have to be cut to size to fit the iphone 4 micro sim

    • Steve Jobs

why not wait till your contract runs out then upgrade as by then the price and tariffs will be down and better and the added bonus that you wont have to worry about if its unlocked etc.having said that some jailbreak apps are written by apple employees in an offical unoffical way.ie they write it with blessing of bosses and if they work then good as customers use them and swap newtworks but if it doesnt then it dont harm their rep. also they get to publicy say that they shouldnt be used etc.

      • bensillis

But then the iPhone 5 comes along and it all happens again!

O2 are not offering the same deal on Pay As You Go like they always have done, there is no unlimited data!!!

They can take a running jump if they think I'll be buying anything from them!

    • Chris

how could u possibly know that? as far as i can tell theres no info regarding prices or tarrifs yet, let alone what free data is supplied with the taffir :/ corrrect me if i am wrong tho :)

      • Darren

O2 website shows the pricing plan and data is now 500MB

  • Chris UK1

oh yes, then there's that sim to microsim fiasco…

    • pete

u will soon get a little device of ebay to do it for you

  • pete

well if i get an unlocked iphone 4 my data plan off 1gb will still be decent through vodafone i have a great deal ,unlimited internet (1gb) unlimited texts and 600 mins for £40 a month

  • Cal_shaw

My iphone 3G contract runs out in September 2011!!! and on top of this it was recently stolen and i had no insurance so now am using a poor phone :( . I want the Iphone 4 but i went on o2 website and it said £520 to get it upgraded! what is the best thing for me to do??? should i get it on PAYG?? cheers in advance x

    • benji

If you want to upgrade to iphone 4 then it'll be a one-off payment to o2 for £260

      • bensillis

It depends on how many months you have left on your contract, no?

      • Darren

according to O2 website it will cost £20 for each remaining month of your contract which will be £320 for me

  • Babyarmadillo

O2 are offering unlimited wifi but 500MB data in UK up to £45/month (18 month) £40 (24 month). Data increases from then on to 1GB UK data at £60/65/month (18/24 month).

I'm more interested in whether the iPhone will be unlocked this time, especially as all operators are offering tariffs.

Still no sign from O2 as to what PAYG handset price is. Personally I prefer the simplicity tariffs.

    • Cal1470

Unconfirmed yet but we think it'll be £399 for the 16GB model

      • bensillis

Who's we, might I ask? Sounds a good bet.

      • Chris

really? how did u work that out?

  • Sauly Boy

If I upgrade from 3GS what will happen to my Apps? Can I transfer them or do I have to start from scratch? :(
    Thx

    • benji

No, you can retrieve them from your computer and you will have to download them to your new iphone

      • Sauly Boy

But will I have to re-purchase paid for apps even if i still have on my computer?

        • benji

Shouldn't have to, if you struggle to put the apps onto the iphone then contact apple as you have purchased these apps and can use them on a new upgrade.

          • Brad Jones

Do You know the price of the iphone 4?

          • bensillis

Sorry Brad, it's still not been confirmed for the UK.

        • jerry

No need to pay for anything again… You can set up the new iPhone exactly as you have the old one… Including the position of the apps on the screen…

One of the advantages of iTunes!

      • bensillis

One of the advantages of iTunes!

    • lobos09

      Open Itunes on your computer.

Plug in your iPhone to your computer until it is recognised by itunes.

Click on “File” in iTunes and then click the option “transfer purchased items to computer”

This will transfer all purchased items bought via your iphone (rather than having been purchased via the computer)

You will then simply sync any new iphone / ipod / ipad and retrieve all purchased apps, music, books etc.

      Hope this is helpful.

wanna do pay and go, i heard iphone 4 is going to replace the pricing of the iphone 3gs. the iphone 3gs will reduce by £100 apparetnly !

    • bensillis

That's the case with dollars at least in the US. Where did you hear it would be the same for the UK?

  • Steve Jobs

on pay as you on o2 it wont be nay more expensive than current models so about £440 for the 16gb model and £550 for the 32gb model. o2 and apple know they cant charge more than that for it on pay as you go as they wouldnt shift any.they hardly shift many on pay as you as it is i think. so it will either be same price or cheaper. it wil be same price, hence why it still is 16gb and 32gb versions. and that leaves the 3gs to be sold on payg at the price the 3g was ie about £350.and the 3g will be discontinued.

  • Liquidaz

those O2 contract deals look terrible, ill stick with the cheaper simplicity and a PAYG phone. Im also waiting for the other networks to release their prices

  • Emma

I've heard a contract at £30 p/m, plus £11 p/m insurance with o2, still leaves a £199 payment for the handset? Getting on for over £900 over an 18 month period! I would rather pay out £450 for the phone, cover it on my home insurance and keep my PAYG deal, leaving me £500 better off!

  • Ravi

PAYG because I live in India, and I can't fulfill a UK contract from India :D

  • History1926

I have a £45 contract with o2, and on this i get ulimited internet access, however, shortly all the major companys including o2 and going to “cap” the amount of internet access you can have ,in other words it will not be unlimited access anymore. Right, so if i keep my exisiting contract and just buy the iphone 4 sim free, i will keep my benifits and ulimited access for ever !!!!!!!!!!. this “limited internet access will be for all new contracts.

  • Robii J

pay as you go works out cheaper, gethe 16gb iphone 4 for £499, get a monthly contract for £20 a month 600 mins 500mb of internet unlimited texts, over 12 months u pay £750, until the next iphone comes out use o2 recycle get around £200 for your iphone 4, and use that to buy the next iphone. No silly £20 extra a month till your contract runs out rubbish, for me thats the best and cheapest option!
