UPDATE: We don’t know the iPhone 4 UK price for O2 Pay & Go still, but we’ve now confirmed with the network that it will be sold on PAYG from launch day, alongside contract.

We’ve been getting tips from readers today keen to discover the iPhone 4 UK price that a Pay As You Go iPhone 4 won’t be sold in stores. We’re happy to confirm otherwise: O2′s new micro site for the iPhone 4 says that you’ll be able to buy it upfront!

Although Carphone Warehouse staff have reportedly been informing customers that the iPhone 4 won’t be sold on PAYG tariffs, O2′s new site detailing upgrade eligibility confirms that a Pay & Go (the network’s name for PAYG tariffs) iPhone 4 will be available.

The site doesn’t give the PAYG iPhone 4 UK price unfortunately, but you can bet it’ll be big. The iPhone 3GS on O2 Pay & Go currently starts at £449 – we can’t see a thinner, faster, more swizztastic version with HD video recording built in costing much less.

iPhone 4 UK price: What are you willing to pay?

Of course, the plus side of paying such a hefty iPhone 4 UK price up front is that you can wonder off and pick up any other phone as soon as it comes along, with no monthly pound of flesh to hand over.

We’ve contacted O2 about the iPhone 4 UK price for Pay & Go, and availability, and will update if and when we get a comment from the company.

Will you be buying an iPhone 4 on PAYG? How much are you willing to pay? Let us know in the comments below!

    • bensillis

Wow! We'll be trying that out too. Thanks for the tip!

      • Anton

I am wondering, what if calling to the o2, what will they say?…

    • Anton

You had to ask the exact question about the PAYG version, I think…

    • Chris

so does that mean it'll cost £449 for pay as you go then?

      • Steve Jobs

yes it does, as ive said on many sites, there is a reason that at least to start with the iphone 4 payg is 16gb & 32gb. so it can be charged the same as 3gs payg. £450 and about £550 respectivly. that way the 3g s will be sold at about £350 and the 3g stopped. apple know they couldnt justify charging more unless it had greater capacity ie min of 64gb. that will come in the form of the next iphone next year.maybe allthough i suspect apple would do same as here, that way they can justify to continue selling the iphone at the prices they do.

        • Paul_hocking

i have just pre ordered direct from apple the iphone 4 is gunna be 499 for 16gb and 599 for 32 gb but orange tarifs are about £20-30 quid cheaper for the phone

  • Matt

Nothing really to do with the article itself, rather the “Related Stories” section just below it. Specifically, one saying “Further Xbox 360 price cuts confirmed”…its from August 2008. Good to see we're keeping it relevant, hehe…

    • United-reds

hey please can you tell me where to find the chat thingy ??
      thanjks

  • W33dug

I'll go up to £650 for a 64GB PAYG, i still have 12 months to run on my 3Gs contract. I'll give up my season ticket for the football this year :(

    • bensillis

Wow, that's commitment! Unfortunately, 64GB iPhones don't exist yet, and by the looks of things won't for at least another year.

  • Mathieu

Carphone Warehouse just always unilaterally refuse to sell the iPhone on PAYG from what I've gathered.

    • bensillis

Well, you know where to go if you do want one!

  • Stephen Shale

A question about memory size: is 16GB acceptable? is anyone able to give me an idea of what 16GB holds, or if they have found 16GB enough/not enough? or is it worth shelling out a bit more for the 32GB?

    • mickey

i had a 3gs 16gb and although i didn't have music on mine i had ''a lot of apps'' and in the 7 month i've had it i ''never'' had more than 5 gig on my phone.

      • Stephen Shale

thanks mickey that's exactly what i wanted to hear. i have an iPod nano, love it, am not thinking of getting rid of it. so i dont think i'll have much music on the iPhone. and bensillis, i doubt i'll have a a lot of films either (this now sounds like i'm not really going to end up using it much?!). i am thinking of the apps side of things, so its good to know 16GB should be plenty for that.

i'm expecting the iPhone 4 16GB to be the price of the 3GS 32GB, so i dont think i'll stretch my budget to get the 32GB.

        • bensillis

It sounds to me like the 16GB is definitely the right choice. Don't worry – I really don't know many people who carry around and iPhone full of just movies with them.

          • Stephen Shale

(iPhone amateur approaching)….a question about 3G data now. An Orange pay as you go SIM, for £10 a month, comes with 250MB of “mobile internet browsing”….does downloading music/apps, etc, come out of this amount….and again, how likely is it that i'd use this up?! thanks for all the answers.

    • bensillis

Depends how big your music collection is. 16GB could fit a good 4-5,000 MP3 songs encoded at 128kbps. You're looking at a third to half that at higher sound qualities. You'll only be able to fit about 30 feature films max on 16GB, but that's probably much less of an issue than music.

    • Cheema

I had a 32gb iphone 3gs and I only used about 8gb so this time I am going for a 16gb as I will not need that much space. The only way you would need 16gb+ is if you have hours and hours of video. I had many many apps and about 2000 songs

  • Steffan Chyzak

It should be £200 and £300 for the larger version. Then we will have to pay again as soon as the 64gb version comes out after xmas.

  • Hsd

16gb black £450 but it cost $199 in the us?????

    • bensillis

You're not comparing like with like Hsd – a sum as large as £450 is for a Pay As You Go or unlocked handset. To sell an iPhone for as little as $199 in the US still requires the iPhone 4 to be heavily subsidized on a monthly contract.

    • Imrankhan9240

that is like thier version of the pay monthly version, if it was that cheap everyone in the USA would be chillin with an iPhone 4 haha

    • Gothard

thts coz it has like a 2 year contract with it like $60 a month then the phone is an extra $199

    • Harley_cyrus

THE $199 is in a contract for two years, dunno how much the tariff is though

    • Justyatwork

yeah but if u read it proper ….. it cost's $199 if u get a 2 year contract with at&t

  • Carwynwideload

im willing to pay up to £550 for the 32gb version.
I went to all the main network shops today and was told that they have no idea about the pricing until launch date. But, when i went into vodafone, they said that they will not be offering the iphone 4 for PAYG, so only on monthly plans? :S
I have a feeling we might be in for a disappointment……

    • bensillis

Good sleuthing there! I fear that maybe the case – Vodafone doesn't sell a PAYG iPhone 3GS currently.

  • Frank

In Germany one can already order the iPhone 4 without a contract. The price for the 16GB model is 1,100 Euros (900 GBP) and the price for the 32GB model is 1,200 Euros (990 GBP). In the past, prices in Germany were around 10% higher than in the UK but the exchange rate is now a bit worse than last year so we might see the same prices in the UK for this model.

  • Imrankhan9240

Hi, this is what it is, it could be £399 16GB and £499 16GB as the 3Gs will come down to £350 and the 3G Model will be discontinued, it maybe a little more higher though

    • Keele4

The 3G model already is discontinued. 3GS is downgraded to 8GB now.

  • iPrincess

I got told today in chat on UK store, that it is considered an announced but unreleased product at present and as such the specifications may possibly change and therefore they couldn't provide a price at this time, however it will be available to pre-order from tomorrow – but they would give me no straight answer on when to expect prices to be available!

  • Jbaptiste100

whatever it cost does not really matter. I think its the same for people who have a good financial resource. Get it no matter what!!

  • Paulcox123

Well for the UK Apple are letting you pre-order today for £499 for the 16GB and £599 for 32GB. I am happy to pay for the 16 but not the 32. Im hoping when O2 release PAYG prices they will include an offer like with the 3GS they were allowing a years free internet.

Hoping the iPhone 4 has a good deal too

  • Trevor

I highly expect the payg option prices will not be available until the 23rd or 24th, as this will allow apple to milk the pre-order handsets and directly take the cash themselves rather than pass that money through a 3rd party. T-mobile have informed me that they won't be selling the iPhone 4 as a pay as you go option, will be contract only.

  • Moheetvij

Its £499 pre-order on apple website

  • Liam787

was just on the apple store, and you can buy the 16gb for 499 and the 32 for 599

  • sophieeee

i want it for my 16th birthday in a few months and im allowed to get it if it comes on pay as you go!
i would like pay £450 to £500 for it but would need insurance and stuff but like please come on pay as you go and 02 :) xx

  • Youugah_t

I am willling to buy I phone 4 for £300
