Until fairly recently, mobile phone cameras weren’t all that great at recording video. The Samsung Wave is among a group of new mobiles that can record video in 720p resolution. Cast off blurry old 480×480 and join the HD revolution, friends. Read on to find out how.

Making the jump to HD
Setting the Samsung Wave‘s sensor to record 720p is ridiculously simple. From the camera preview screen, where you take your snaps, you just have to tap on the Settings icon, which looks like a cog, and set the resolution to 1280×720. Welcome to HD land, readers.
There are some other settings to change to make the most of the Samsung Wave’s HD powers too. Change the video quality to “superfine”, which will cut down the compression used, and turn audio recording on, unless you’re going for that Buster Keaton ultra-retro vibe. All your recordings will now be of blisteringly high quality.
Pimp out your storage
Making the jump to HD comes with a cost – storage. Just a minute of footage will take the best part of 100MB in memory, and even if you use your storage for nothing but recording video, you’re guaranteed to run out of space half-way through your first grand opus.
In the camera settings menu, you can choose whether you want to save your mini movies to the internal memory or SD card. Do the right thing folks, buy a nice big microSD card if the Samsung Wave’s video skills sound like your cup of molten awesome.
Let’s go outside? When are you most likely to use the Samsung Wave’s camera? When on holiday? During a blissfully boiling summer BBQ? At a party? All but the last put your phone’s screen in bright sunlight.
AMOLED screens are known for their high reflectivity, meaning you’ll see your face in the screen as much as you see what’s displayed on it. The Samsung Wave’s new Super AMOLED screen cuts down on this effect massively, but it packs-in a feature to help too. Outdoor Visibility mode cranks up the brighness on the display and saturates colours to the max, to compensate for the washing-out effect bright sunlight will have on the screen.
It makes seeing what your camera sees a lot easier in the summer sun. Just don’t turn it on when inside. It’s not pretty.
Share the wealth?Once you have made your mini masterpiece, the Samsung Wave lets you send it out to friends, loved ones, or even random strangers if you’re the exhibitionist type. From the media gallery, where your vids live, you can email videos – if they’re small enough – or upload them to YouTube over 3G or Wi-Fi. The best way to unshackle your videos from your Samsung Wave though is with AllShare.
This will interface with other Samsung AllShare devices, including TVs, Blu-ray players and PCs, streaming your videos over Wi-Fi. You can’t beat watching a 720p video you just made on a big-screen HD TV. If you’ve already taken our advice and bought a high capacity SD card, you can always pull video files over that directly, or using the Kies phone sync PC app. The Samsung Wave likes getting its media out there as much as it likes filming it.
