The Samsung Wave has ultra-snappy 3G and Wi-Fi “n” connections on-board, so if you don’t make the most of online features like social networks and IM, you’re missing out. Plain old calling aside, IM is the quickest way to get in contact with your mates, and you can do it right from your Samsung Wave.

IM your favourite
Instant messaging is great because it combines the best bits of calling and texting. It’s as quick and direct as a call, but doesn’t require talking – and let’s face it, sometimes you just don’t want to talk. Best of all, it’s free. All it costs is data, and there’s a good chance your Samsung Wave’s contract will allow you to use a hefty wedge of megabytes of data within your monthly fee.
Chatting away on the Wave
The Samsung Wave features a built-in IM client, developed by the folks at Palringo. It’ll let you login to all sorts of IM services and chat away to your mates, including AIM and Google Talk, within minutes. If you don’t have any IM accounts yet, you can sign up for free online – and you’ll just need an email address to find out if your friends are on there.
This IM app is designed to rope together contacts from multiple IM networks, giving you a one-stop solution for all your chat needs. The interface is split into four different tabs – Overview, Messages, Friends and Groups.
Overview is where you sign up to the messaging services you’re a member of. Just enter your login and you’ll be away – the app with automatically add your friends. Under the Messages tab you’ll find all your PMs (private messages), while the Friends and Groups tabs do exactly what they say on the tin, storing your buddies and any groups they may be listed under in the networks.
The Palringo app lists all your IM mates next to each other in one simple list, but you can see which network they come from with the little graphic icons that accompany each entry.
Contacts
The Samsung Wave lets you integrate IM ID info into your contacts, so that you can keep track of all the online aliases of your friends. It’s in the additional info section – the Wave knows that not everyone has a dozen different online names – but if you and your posse really get into the IM scene, you can log the logins for the following networks: Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, Jabber, QQ. Phew, that’s a lot.
