With a 4-inch screen and ultra-slim frame, the Samsung Galaxy S looks impressive from first glance, but its best features are on the inside. A powerful battery, stack-loads of memory and the fastest connectivity options seen in smartphones make the Samsung Galaxy S the most complete Android we’ve ever laid eyes on. What does it mean in real terms? Read on to find out.

Massive memory
The Samsung Galaxy S has masses of memory, especially for an Android phone. With 16GB of space and an additional 2GB ROM internal memory, its top rivals haven’t a hope of keeping up – the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has only 1GB to its name, and the HTC Desire has even less. With only 512MB, it offers just 3% of what the Samsung Galaxy S is packing.
What can you do with all this memory? A key fact about the Android 2.1 operating system is that it only lets you install apps to the ROM internal memory, not the microSD card, so the Samsung Galaxy S gives you much more room to play with than the average Android. There’s 1.8GB to play with, compared to the HTC Desire’s 120MB.
What else can 16GB of memory offer? More than 10 days’ worth of MP3s, hundreds of thousands of word documents or around three hours of 720p video recorded from the phone’s camera. Even with gigabytes of memory at hand, the ultra high-quality video the Samsung Galaxy S can capture will eat up your space in no time.
Max power
The Samsung Galaxy S has some serious components hidden under its battery cover, but then it has an equally serious 1500 mAh lithium ion battery. With the help of the built-in power control widget, which lets you switch off key features easily when not in use, you’ll be able to eke several days use out of the Samsung Galaxy S without a charge.
Samsung has optimised the Samsung Galaxy S’s media player to give it 30 hours’ worth of playback from a single charge. You’ll also be able to watch a multiple movies and surf the web for hours on end without draining the Samsung Galaxy S’s battery
The net wizard
Every smartphone needs a decent spread of connectivity features to deliver the full smartphone experience. The Samsung Galaxy S doesn’t just make make do with a generous spread though, it offers a feast.
4G connectivity is some way off, but 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA 3G connections are on-board. The speeds you get under real-world conditions will depend on your carrier, but max these connections out and you’d be downloading almost 1MB a second.
To put this into context, this would let you download a full album of cd-quality music in under a minute, or a full Divx movie in under 15 minutes. That’s about as long as the credits on your average popcorn blockbuster.
These 3G connections are impressive, but they’ve become a standard for top-flight smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S, once again, isn’t without its own spectacular tech specs on this front. Its Wi-Fi connection supports the new “n” standard as well as the standard b/g. Match it with an “n” wireless router and you’ll be able to enjoy Wi-Fi ranges of up to 90m. This Wi-Fi standard is incredibly rare in phones, even top-end ones.
It doesn’t end there either. Bluetooth 3.0 is on-board and offers transfer speeds of up to 24Mbps, eight times faster than the more common Bluetooth 2.1. The Samsung Galaxy S has so many high-powered features, you need to dig around a little to find all the nuggets of smartphone gold.
