GoldenEye was pretty much the Nintendo N64 game to have. It certainly took up hours of our teenage years. Now the long-dormant rumour of a GoldenEye remake has flashed back into life like the barrel of a Walther PPK. Images uncovered from a leaked Activision survey show artwork for GoldenEye headed to the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS and it looks like there’ll be a Golden Gun controller to go with it…

Rumours surfaced last year after a loose-lipped animator claimed he’d been working on GoldenEye 2010. Now it seems the claims on his CV weren’t just geeky wishful thinking. The leak from Activision says a new version of GoldenEye is being “developed from the ground up” for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.

While the new GoldenEye will apparently featured classic levels including ones set in St Petersburg and the Caribbean, the developers are modernising the game, ditching Piers Brosnan for Daniel Craig.

Though Bond’s face looks set to change, GoldenEye on the Wii will reportedly keep the same four-player split-screen that made the original so addictive and add support for 8-player online matches.

The GoldenEye remake is said to feature the same range of weapons will on the cards too and the leaked survey also shows renders of a golden gun Classic controller and an entirely golden Wii remote shell.

Since rumours of a GoldenEye remake have been running around since late last year, we’ve got our fingers-crossed and our tuxedos ready for a launch at this year’s E3 which kicks off on June 15.

Let us know: are you excited about the idea of a GoldenEye remake? Or would you rather see an all new Bond game for the Wii? And more importantly: will Daniel Craig make a better virtual Bond than Piers Brosnan?

Not as interested as I might have been a few years ago. I think I'd still rather play it un-moderized on an N-64 than on a Wii. And it's a Walther PPK, not a “Walter”

Talk about ruing a game! One of the best Bond movies ever! followed up by one of the Best Video Games ever, Bond or not and they destroy all of that by replacing the Bond who it is supposed to be. I don't get the logic behind this at all. The stories aren't even compatible with the rebooted Bond series. Why would they do this? It makes me think they are changing the game rather than updating it. Seems like they are using the GoldenEye name to release another crappy Game. I hope they fail

It certainly does scream, especially if Rare aren't involved. That said, who knows if they can make a modern FPS these days.

I'm actually waiting for the remake to the remake of this title. I imagine that somebody with enough sense (and taste) will hack the game, create a new set of textures for Craig's Bond model to resemble Brosnan and make a playable PC version available. The developers could have anticipated the large negative consumer feedback for deciding to continue development regardless of omitting the finely crafted hero figurine and replacing him with a generic green plastic army soldier, but they chose to take the gamble and alienate the audience. So therefore, I will wait for the remake to the remake. If it doesn't happen, que sera, sera – but I still won't touch anything with Craig's face in a tuxedo on it. Thanks, but…no thanks.
