Steve Jobs has gone on his record with his take on the iPhone 4.0 leak. We’d been predicting that he wouldn’t comment on the ongoing case in his All Things D interview but it seems we underestimated the Apple supremo. In fact, he was pretty forthright about how he believes the new iPhone got loose. Read on Steve Jobs’ take on the iPhone 4.0 leak…

Apple pretty much confirmed that the Gizmodo iPhone 4.0 leak was real when it fired off a legal letter asking for it back but it’s still pretty exciting to hear it directly from Steve Jobs. Explaining his view on the iPhone 4.0 leak, he said: “There’s an ongoing investigation. I can tell you what I do know, though. To make a product you need to test it. You have to carry them outside.”

Where Steve Jobs’ take on the iPhone 4.0 leak differs from the tale told by the iPhone 4.0 finders is that it may not, in fact, have just been left lying in a bar by Gray Powell. He continued: “One of our employees was carrying [it]. There’s a debate about whether he left it in a bar, or it was stolen out of his bag.”

Steve Jobs went on to reveal the discussions that went on within Apple after the iPhone 4.0 leak and it doesn’t sound like good news for Gizmodo. He said: “I got a lot of advice from people that said you’ve got to just let it slide. You shouldn’t go after a journalist because they bought stolen property and tried to extort you. And I thought about that and I decided Apple can’t afford to change its core values…I can’t do that. I’d rather quit.”

Amazingly, after those tough words, he was able to crack a few jokes about the iPhone 4.0 leak too. He described the case as if pitching a movie: “This is a story that’s amazing – it’s got theft, it’s got buying stolen property, it’s got extortion, I’m sure there some sex in there…the whole thing is very colourful.”

So now we know just how riled up Steve Jobs was at the iPhone 4.0 leak. But do you think he was right to push for the iPhone 4.0 police investigation? And what “one more thing” could he add at WWDC to make you excited to see the final version of the new iPhone?
