The Panasonic Lumix FX70 has just arrived to offer a delightful touchscreen compact camera distraction from the torrent of Windows 7 tablets that have been plaguing us this week. Packing a 14.1MP sensor, the Panasonic Lumix FX70 has a wide-aperture Leica lens for fitting more in your snaps and dealing better with dark conditions. Read on for full details on the latest Panasonic compact…

The Panasonic Lumix FX70 (which is known as the Lumix FX75 to our American cousins) has a 5x optical zoom and a 24mm wide-angle Leica lens with an aperture of F2.2. That means it’ll let in loads more light and should take on dingy scenes with aplomb.

Round the back, the Panasonic Lumix FX70 is packing a 3in LCD touchscreen which you can tap to activate auto-focus. Choose a face and the camera will automatically switch to portrait mode and keep track of the fizzog you’re hoping to capture.

There’s also the usual package of clever features stuffed into the Panasonic Lumix FX70 including face detection, intelligent scene selection and optical image stabilisation. And if you’re trying to capture action scenes, there’s a new motion deblur mode which uses intelligent exposure and intelligent ISO to give you the quickest shutter speed possible.

The Panasonic Lumix FX70 will also capture 720p HD video either in AVCHD Lite or MJPEF format. The auto-focus feature present in the stills shooting mode works when you’re capturing video too so your shoots should stay in focus.

Panasonic is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to pricing at the moment but we know the Panasonic Lumix FX70 will be headed out way in August in either black or silver.

Let us know what you think of Panasonic’s new compact. Does it have what you’re looking for in your next camera or are your after something a little more heavy duty like the Sony NEX-5?
