A Nokia N8 video giving the first glimpse of the finished Symbian ^3 OS has arrived. It’s great news. We got to handle the hardware when we snapped our Nokia N8 photos but the phone stayed firmly switched off. So what secrets are revealed in the Nokia N8 video? Read on to see Symbian ^3 in action…

The Nokia N8 video (the first of three set to be flung out by the folk over at Nokia Conversations) shows that’ll you’l have the option to add three home screens with space for six widgets on each. The Symbian ^3 menu transitions looks speedy and there’s a glimpse of its multitasking potential, flipping between the music and photo apps.

Symbian ^3 on the Nokia N8 will also include threaded messaging in SMS and the onscreen QWERTY keyboard looks a doddle to type on. Interestingly, the phone stays in landscape mode throughout the demo – could that be the best way to rock a Nokia N8?

Like Android 2.2 Froyo, Symbian ^3 will come packing integrated Flash in its browser and there’s a quick cameo for Nokia Ovi Maps navigation which will tap into the phone’s GPS to give you free mapping.

Since the Nokia N8 video only gives a brief glimpse of the new OS, it’s hard to tell how it’ll compete against Android-toting powerhouses like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 or the HTC Desire. And there’s always the looming spectre of iPhone 4.0 on the horizon.

We’re still waiting for a Nokia N8 release date but it can’t be too far off with Vodafone Nokia N8 registration open now. Could this clip sway you to get your name on the list?

Let us know what you think of the Nokia N8 video. Does Symbian ^ 3 look like it’s shaping up to keep the Finns in the fight or is it just not enough to compete?
