So your boss is making you miss the match, and won’t let you watch the World Cup at your desk, eh? Never fear. Elgato has everything you need to watch the World Cup in secret at work using your iPhone or iPad.

Get set for streaming
Before you can watch the World Cup on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to receive it. That doesn’t mean snatching Freeview signals out of the sky with your Apple portable, but instead setting your home computer up to receive the football, re-encode it in iPhone or iPad-friendly format and beam it over the internet, ready for you to receive at work.

It’s a fiendishly simple process that means you’ll get TV signals in the best quality, and with the most reliability. Just hook up an Elgato EyeTV DTT Deluxe to your Mac’s USB socket at home, install the EyeTV software from the included CD and you’ll have everything you need.

Once it’s up and running, and receiving TV broadcasts at home, dive into the EyeTV software’s preferences window, and click on the iPhone tab.

Next tick the boxes to “Enable access from EyeTV for iPhone/iPad” and “Use My EyeTV.” This sets up EyeTV to stream your household’s Freeview signal to an iPhone or iPad while you’re away at work.

The last step is to follow the on-screen instructions to set up a free My EyeTV account, giving yourself a login name and password to tap into your computer from Apple’s devices.

Install the EyeTV iPhone and iPad app
Switch to your iPhone or iPad, dive into the App Store and download the Elgato EyeTV app. It’s a small download, and once installed will let you tap into your home TV tuner on the road.

Once the app is installed, simply tap the Edit button followed by the green icon and “Add EyeTV”. Next tap in your My EyeTV login details.

Your iPad or iPhone will hop online and seek out the TV signals on offer from your home computer. Once it’s made a connection you’ll be able to watch live broadcasts and change channels, schedule recordings to be saved to your home computer’s hard drive and watch back programmes you’ve saved previously.

Set your iPhone or iPad up, and seek out a Wi-Fi connection for the best experience. If your iPhone is a 3G or 3GS model you’ll be able to tune in anywhere you are simply by using the app. If you’re using a Wi-Fi only iPad or iPod touch, you’ll need to seek out a wireless hotspot to connect to.

If you’re using a 3G iPad, then get set for the most luxurious, and most secretive World Cup of your life. Fire up the Elgato EyeTV app, and you’ll be able to enjoy live matches on the iPad’s large screen, wherever you are! Just don’t let the boss find you watching in the stationary cupboard when this months accounts still need sorting.

Stream through the web
Using the Elgato EyeTV app on your iPhone or iPad will give the best viewing experience. However, if you’re unable to install apps on your Apple device, for example if it’s been supplied by your employer or borrowed from a friend, you can still tune in using Elgato’s web interface.

Built to stream live and recorded TV through a standard web browser, it works a treat on both the iPad and iPhone. Just point the Safari browser to https://live3g.eyetv.com and log in using your My EyeTV details. You’ll be able to choose from any of the live TV channels received by your home computer, and even watch recordings remotely too.
