The HP Envy 14 has just got a UK price tag slapped on it and thanks to a direct dollars to pounds conversion, it’ll set you back the same as an entry level 13in Macbook Pro. It looks like it’s not just the Macbook Pro’s looks that inspired the HP Envy.

Of course, HP Envy 14 has a few features on its side in a battle with the 13in Macbook Pro. There’s that larger 14.5in screen, the option to add 3G and a newer Intel Core i5 processor versus the Macbook Pro’s older Intel Core 2 Duo chip.

Apple claims the 13in Macbook Pro will give you up to 10 hours of battery life while the HP Envy plumps for 6 hours. That more powerful processor plus the ATI Mobility Radeon discrete graphics draw quite a lot of juice.

We’ve talked about the Apple tax plenty in the past and it seems HP has pulled a similar trick. If you changed the US price of $999 into pounds sterling, you’d get a much more palatable £660. Still, the HP Envy 14 remains a pretty desirable machine.

Which would you opt for if you had £999 in your back pocket? The HP Envy 14 or the 13in Macbook Pro?

Different strokes! I’m siding with OS X though, much as I like the Envy line.

      You are such a simpleton.

How can they justify $999 = £999!? Thats ridiculious!! It should be £699 at most, where does the extra £300 come from? Anyone know a good place to import from?

    • http://www.electricpig.co.uk Ben Sillis

Amazon.com should sell it – though I’m not sure if it gets sniffy with large boxes of consumer electronics.

      • Jonathan

If this really is gonna be £999 i’ll just wait for a MBP 13″ refresh… I’m still in shock at how $999 = £999… Madness from HP!

        • http://www.electricpig.co.uk Ben Sillis

It’s a bit bonkers, especially since the new 13-inch plastic MacBook now has pretty much the same specs. For £999.

  • Jonathan

I might hold out and see what happens, if HP come to their senses put the base model somewhere between £700 – £800 then i’m in!

  • Martin

i was going to get this machine havd it been sub £700 amd a fair conversion of the US price, but not with the rip off price – uk consumers always get taken for a ride, so i'll look elsewhere.

    shame on you HP.

    • bensillis

Yeah HP does seem to have entirely missed the point of undercutting Apple, by er, not undercutting Apple.

    nice one

  • the weasel.

I love HP, but as a music producer after a stable system (that can handle ultra low latency USB audio work) I'd go for the Mac any day of the week. Silly HP, they've missed a trick by not undercutting apple significantly where they could've. UK PC prices across the board are a bad joke to be honest, especially when you see how much cheaper they are in the US…
