Steam for Mac has missed its original April public launch date, but not to fear: Valve has just given official word of a release date for the game download service on OS X, and it’s not far off at all.
Unless you were one of the lucky Apple gamers who got in on the closed Steam for Mac beta, chances are you’ve been tapping your fingers restlessly waiting for the service to arrive, and give you access to all sort of future goodies including the Half Life series and even Portal 2. And now we know when that’ll be: Valve has confirmed that Steam for Mac will launch on 12 May, just under a fortnight away.
We’re excited about Steam for Mac not just because it’ll save us a trip to the shops to buy a new game, but for the kickstart it could give to gaming on Apple’s OS X. Aside from a few popular titles, flagship new games are rarely ported over, but if Steam for Mac takes off, it could give developers an incentive to take a look at the platform. Fingers crossed.
