RIM’s WES conference for BlackBerry addicts and developers is going down in Florida this week (Hence yesterday’s BlackBerry Pearl 3G launch), so company co-CEO Mike Lazaridis naturally took the opportunity while it’s in focus to announce BlackBerry 6, due out in the “next calendar quarter”, which we’d take to mean July to September.

BlackBerry 6 OS revealed early

We’ve seen leaked screens of BlackBerry 6 (Or OS 6.0) before, but Lazaridis took the time to dish out a few more details, beyond the Windows Phone 7 styled moniker. It’ll be available for both touchscreen and non-touchscreen phones, while the upcoming WebKit browser will play a prominent part it.

That’s bad news for anyone hoping for a better browser on their ageing BlackBerry Curve, but there’s still hope yet. The co-CEO promised that RIM will do its “best” to backdate the BlackBerry 6 software to existing handsets, so we’re optimistic that the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Storm 2 at least will get access to it.

Tantalisingly though, a launch so soon without confirmation of upgrades for current models suggests that we could be seeing a new device, or range of push email phones land with BlackBerry 6. Could one of them be the rumoured BlackBerry Slider? Expect more details soon.
