Steam for Mac hasn’t rolled out publicly just yet, but a few lucky testers are getting to grips with the game download service on OS X already, and we’ve been treated to a clip of it in action. Read on to see it – this really could make the Mac a gaming frontrunner at last.

Steam for Mac is now in private beta, and looking pretty spiffy already, as you can see from the video below. It’s a near identical design to the PC version, and store browsing and library access is already up and running, with the homescreen proudly boasting about SteamPlay, which will let you pay for a game once, then play it on any PC or Mac.

Half Life, Portal 2 hitting Steam for Mac

Unfortunately, there’s no sign yet of a public release for Steam for Mac, though Valve originally promised it was coming in April so it could still squeeze a launch in next week. Still, with things looking this good, Steam for Mac can’t be far off now – we just hope Portal 2 isn’t either.

I don’t have more experience nor do I know anything about Steam. What sort of games are we talking about? Will the library be as extensive as on PC or will it be limited to a few games in the Mac’s limited gaming catalogue?

It won’t be as extensive (at least yet), but some big name PC games are coming, including the Half Life series (one of the most critically acclaimed first person shooter series ever), and Portal 2, the sequel to the bonkers dimension switching original. But the very fact that a name as big as Valve is trying means it has the potential to forge a path for others to follow.
