iPhone users could get their hands on Google Maps Navigation soon. Comments from Google after the UK Google Maps Navigation launch suggests its winging its way to platforms other than Android and iPhone could be amongst them. Will Apple let Google Maps Navigation drive onto the iPhone?
Steve Lee, product manager for Google Maps for mobile, has been talking about the future of Google Maps Navigation: “Google Maps is an application that has the most breadth on other platforms – Windows Mobile, iPhone, J2ME phones but Google Maps navigation requires higher capabilities.”
Lee confirmed that Google is looking at other platforms for Google Maps Navigation and now speculation is rampant that iPhone will be one of them. Grabbing the free satnav smarts of Google Maps Navigation on the iPhone would be welcome but could be tricky with Google and Apple at war over Android.
Apple gobbled up its own mapping firm last year, so we could see native turn-by-turn navigation arrive with iPhone 4.0 before Google can get iPhone Google Maps Navigation going. A free option would definitely grab more users than excellent but pricey options like the £59.99 TomTom iPhone app.
