Twitter has announced that it is beavering away on an official Android app. The revelation came courtesy of Twitter CEO Evan Williams, who told attendees of the Twitter Chirp conference that Google’s operating system would soon be getting its own fully native app for the microblogging phenomenon.

The revelation comes only a few days after Twitter completed the purchase of top Twitter iPhone app Tweetie, which it intends to rename “Twitter for iPhone” and follow up with “Twitter for iPad”. It also recently launched an official Twitter BlackBerry client. We can only assume that “Twitter for Android” isn’t too far off.

Any official Twitter Android app will face some stiff competition in the form of popular third-party clients like Seesmic and Twitdroid, but bearing the official Twitter seal of approval could prove a major selling point.
