UPDATE: Sony has confirmed to us that the PS3 3D upgrades will be free.
The Sony PS3 3D upgrades, bringing extra dimensional gaming and Blu-ray to the console, have been pencilled in by Sony UK. If you’ve got a 3D TV, you’ll be able to try out gaming with 3D goggles first, and if you buy the right one, you might even get some free games to try!
Sony’s been showing off PS3 3D gaming (As in the kind with a 3D TV, not just your average three dimensional platform game) since last year, but now the gadget and games giant just confirmed that the firmware upgrade required to run them will roll out before the launch of Sony’s 3D TVs, meaning it’ll be made available by June at the latest.
Although Sony hasn’t confirmed exact PS3 3D game launch titles, it has also revealed that four free 3D games for its console will be made available to anyone who buys a Sony 3D TV, timed to “complement” the launch of the Bravia HX803 out in June. That wording probably gives Sony a caveat should they be delayed, but we’ve seen one of the four games, Super Stardust HD, in action on a PS3 3D model already and it looks more than ready to go. The other PS3 3D free games are the full Wipeout HD, Pain and a demo of MotorStorm Pacific Rift (pictured).

The PS3 3D Blu-ray firmware upgrade Sony confirmed last year has also been confirmed to roll out at some point this year. 3D Blu-ray requires two separate high definition video feeds be displayed at the same time (one for each eye) rather than just one for 2D, so although the PS3 has the graphical horsepower to manage it unlike most current Blu-ray players, a firmware upgrade is required to unleash its potential.
Of course, to make the PS3 3D friendly, you’ll need a 3D ready TV and the right goggles too, but assuming Sony makes the firmware upgrades free as it has done in the past, if you’ve got a PlayStation 3 already, at least you won’t have to buy the 3D Blu-ray player as well.
Out June | £TBC | Sony
