Nokia Internet Pulse is a curious new website from the brainboxes at Nokia’s research centre in California. It’s a realtime social network tracker that scans Twitter for buzz about a keyword, then gives you a visual guide to whether the talk is good or bad.

The Nokia Internet Pulse website was unveiled at a conference in Atlanta yesterday, and aims to let you find out whether all the talk on the web about any subject is positive or not, quickly and easily. The site will eventually let you type in any keyword, and see a visual guide spread out over time, breaking down what’s been said about it over the course of a day, and with what other major keywords.

But where Nokia Internet Pulse differs from other Twitter search engines is that it flags up good tweets and bad tweets in blue and red respectively. It could eventually be used to gauge how people react to news and events, and you can bet that if Twitter‘s Promoted Tweets take off companies will be keeping an eye on it to make theirs more appealing.

Right now, Nokia Internet Pulse only works with Twitter and certain keywords (“Nokia”, “Google” and surprisingly, “Android” and “iPhone”) but it’s speedy and easy to use, and Nokia aims to include social networks more broadly, so we’d expect public Facebook updates to be included eventually.

It certainly needs a bit more work, as Nokia Internet Pulse seems to be flagging up tweets with the word “sure” in as positive, and “web” as negative, which seems somewhat illogical, but if you want to experiment, it’s free to try out right now.
