HTC could be gearing up to buy Palm which is apparently offering itself for sale. Rumours suggest HTC wants to snap up the Palm webOS and develop its own mobile OS. Currently HTC relies on Windows Mobile and Google Android on handsets like the HTC Legend and HTC Desire. Is it time for HTC to build its own OS?
HTC chief financial officer, Cheng Hui-Ming, told Bloomberg that it will “continue to assess” whether it will develop its own OS. He continued: “There are many factors to be considered rather than a simple decision to own or not to own proprietary software.”
Palm has not officially announced that it is available for sale but it is heavily rumoured with Goldman Sachs apparently working on finding a buyer for the Palm Pre makers.
Grabbing Palm and webOS could give HTC a head-start in creating its own OS but HTC has made it clear that it will continue to produce Google Android and Windows Mobile phones.
Palm has confirmed that the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi are UK bound but could the next webOS phones we see be built by HTC? It’s not such a mad idea.
