Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers review: sound quality
Lovers of great design rightly hold B&W in high esteem. And now they can add the MM-1 speakers to a line up of some truly amazing gadgets that every sensible tech head lusts after. The MM-1s are indubitably the best looking (and sounding) speakers we’ve ever laid our hands on. But there’s so much more than looks to them.
As with all B&W kit, minimalism is the watchword. Viewed from the front and sides, these are simple black blocks of sonic stardom. And even when you spin them round to scan for inputs, everything is pared down as much as possible. That means that each speaker sits on a marginally raised platform, with cable slots letting you slip unsightly plugs out of sight.
The right hand speaker is where the main action takes place. It houses the power, USB and auxiliary inputs underneath its upright bod’. Slip the cables in, stuff them in their allotted slots and cable spaghetti is a thing of the past. B&W evidently pays as much attention to design detail as it does to sound quality. Yes, you pay big for it, but it’s vital if you cherish corking, clever style alongside brilliant specs.
Pleasingly, said cables are long enough to place on higher shelves or away from your PC to give a more surround sound feel to proceedings. Each one is the height of a paperback, so can slot easily next to your beloved tomes as well as sitting pretty with your Mac or PC. However, we’d suggest you have these out and proud. The chrome finish on the top of each model is really slick and even the concealed power button on the right hand speaker is neatly placed. These are the kind of little flourishes we get gooey over Jonny Ive for.
If you’ve got the cash and like your gadgets and tech to look cool as well as kick out killer sound, then the B&W MM-1s are a must-have.
