Foursquare has announced that it’s cracking down on users who check-in to venues when they’re actually nowhere near them. If you’re a Foursquare fan, the frustration of seeing folk cheating when they check-in may be at an end. So how does Foursquare know you’re where you say you are?
Foursquare says check-ins that don’t appear to come from the place you’re trying to check into will no longer grab you points, badges or mayorships.
The big change made by Foursquare is that the app will now use your mobile’s GPS location to check your whereabouts and only reward you if you really are where you claim to be.
Try to check-in far from the venue and Foursquare will block incentives. It’s a major move for Foursquare as more companies start to add deals and rewards for checking in.
Foursquare says you’ll still be able to check-in when you’ve left somewhere or before you arrive, you just won’t be rewarded for it: “We’re never going to NOT let you check-in…the idea is simply to not award points, mayorships, badges or venue specials if it looks like you didn’t really earn them.”
