iPad-UK-unbox-1

The iPad has landed in Britain. Our trembling hands snatched it from a courier just minutes ago, before ripping the packaging apart and photographing it for your viewing pleasure. Want to see what waits inside Apple’s crisp white iPad box? Read on, and gawp at our pictures.

In typical style, Apple’s packaging is minimalist to the extreme. Lift off the lid, and the iPad gleams from within its white cardboard casket. It’s pretty lonely in there too. Just a USB lead and power adapter are included.

No case, no cleaning cloth, and certainly no dock. That’s a marked difference from the first generation of iPhone, which came with all those extras as standard.

Lift the iPad from its box too, and you might be surprised. It’s heavier than it looks, thanks to Apple’s tapered design, but not as heavy as some reports from the US had led us to believe. It feels around half the heft of a typical netbook, and no match for our beefy wrists. This is something we’re not going to struggle holding, or carrying, for any length of time.

Grasp the iPad in your hands, and simply put, it feels right. From the thick black bezel that stops your fingers nudging the touchscreen as you hold it, to the cool aluminium backing. Apple has made this solid slab of glass and metal feel organic, and that’s before tapping the home screen.

Do so, and the iPad’s screen leaps into life, with a simple icon begging you to hook it up to iTunes so it can activate itself, and get started. Do that, and you’re away, with the now familiar home screen popping into life. If you’ve used an iPhone or iPod touch, the scale of the iPad’s icons will startle you. They seem huge, but are responsive and very finger-friendly.

So will a ipad from USA work in the UK?

  • 90210

I also want to know this. How can I use the app store?

  • http://www.ipadrepairs.org.uk martin

Hi, yes an iPad shipped in from US to UK e.g via BundleBox will work exactly the same as an iPad brought in the UK. At the moment only the WiFi models are sold, but the 3G models will be unlocked-

you can use a mobile broadband dongle such as MiFi by 3 which is a 3G connection that appears like a wifi hostpot to access the internet on the move

The regional settings on an iPad can be modified (eg currency, time etc)

    Hi,

Your iPad’s preloaded app store will not work until the iPad is released here and the system goes live in the UK. You can however download a significant number of the iPad apps on iTunes and sync them to the iPad in the usual way.

The only other way to get around this is to set up a US iTunes account, which is more hassle than its worth for the sake of a couple of weeks since all your apps will then be linked to a new account.

P.S. Everything else works fine, I’m writing this on my iPad in fact and I’m in the UK.
