Alan Wake, the adventure thriller Xbox 360 game from the folks behind Max Payne, has had its release date shunted forward. You’ll now be able to play it earlier than planned, so read on for when it hits.

Alan Wake, developed by Remedy and published by Microsoft, will now be released on 14 May in the UK and Europe, a week earlier than its planned 21 May launch. That’s great news for any game, when we’re so used to endless delays rather than early surprises, but especially so for Alan Wake, which we’ve been waiting for since 2005.

Alan Wake ending still undecided

Unlike the non-stop carnage of Max Payne, Alan Wake takes things at a slightly slower pace and cranks ups the mystery and intrigue. You play Alan Wake, a crime novelist with writer’s block who moves to a small town, only for his wife to vanish. It’s straight out of a Stephen King novel, and given Remedy’s excellent homage to pulp fiction and film noir with Max Payne, we can’t wait.

Incidentally, 21 May sees the release of Rockstar Games’ long awaited Red Dead Redemption Western for Xbox 360 and PS3, so the move could be to avoid a clash. Rockstar previously published Remedy’s Max Payne titles on consoles, and now has complete responsibility for Max Payne 3, so we’d love it if a bit of healthy rivalry brought us a few more games early.

Out 14 May | £49.99 | Remedy
