An iPad and HP Slate specs comparison from an internal HP presentation has leaked onto the web. We saw a new HP Slate video earlier today but now we’ve got the specs to dive into. So how will the HP Slate compare with iPad? Read on for an iPad vs HP Slate stat clash…

Display
The HP Slate features a smaller 1024×600 resolution 8.9in screen. The HP slides flags up the HP Slate’s weakness in this respect compared to the higher resolution iPad screen (a 9.7in 1024×768 panel). Both the HP Slate and the iPad feature an accelerometer, multi-touch and an ambient light sensor.

Processor
The HP Slate will apparently ship with a faster processor than the iPad. The HP slide shows the HP Slate packing a 1.6GHz Atom Menlow processor compared to the 1Ghz Apple A4 chip in the iPad.

Storage
The HP Slate will come in just two flavours when it comes to storage – a 32GB and a 64GB model. But it will also include an SD/SDHC/SDXC reader so you’ll be able to boost your storage space. The iPad comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models but has no way of expanding the storage currently.

Connectivity
The HP Slate has less WiFi connectivity options than the iPad. While the HP Slate just supports 802.11b/g WiFi, the iPad handles 802.11a/b/g/n. Both devices have Bluetooth and optional 3G but the HP Slate seems to include GPS as standard while the iPad only adds A-GPS in the iPad 3G.

Ports
The HP Slate doesn’t list a dedicated microphone like the iPhone, instead it has a combined 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack. Unlike the iPad, the HP Slate includes a USB port but sadly just the one – a USB 2.0 port.

Battery
Both the iPad and the HP Slate have batteries that are not customer replaceable. HP predicts that the HP Slate will offer 5+ hours of battery life which doesn’t bode well versus the iPad battery life of 11 hours plus revealed in the early iPad reviews.

Dimensions
Thought the HP Slate has a smaller screen and is smaller than the iPad, it is only marginally lighter. The HP Slate weighs in at 0.67kg with dimensions of 150 x 234 x 14.7mm versus the iPad at 0.68kg with dimensions of 243.8 x 189.7 x 13.4mm.

Camera
One of the standout features of the HP Slate versus the iPad is the inclusion of cameras. While we were disappointed not to get an iPad camera, the HP Slate will include a 3MP camera and a front facing VGA webcam.

Price
HP is predicting a price range of $549 to $599 for the HP Slate while the iPad is currently selling in the US from $499. Given that we’re still waiting for a UK iPad price, it’s difficult to tell how that’ll stack up for us UK gadget fans trying to choose between the HP Slate and the iPad.

We’re still waiting for a UK release date for the iPad, though it’s due to hit the UK later this month. The HP Slate hasn’t even got an estimated arrival date yet. After seeing the HP Slate specs, will you be willing to wait for it? Or would you rather grab an iPad?

The Atom may be a faster CPU in terms of clock speed but that does not necessarily mean it is more powerful or faster at processing real-world tasks than the Apple processor. Atom-based hand-held devices such as the Archos and netbooks have been hampered by slow response times when running Windows 7 and even the ability to run Flash will be heavily compromised until Adobe utilises separate graphics processing units. Intel’s reliance on legacy CPU designs means that its mobile processors are much slower and more power hungry than ARM-based rivals even if their clock speeds are higher.
