Asus has no fewer than two iPad tablet rivals in the works, the company’s chairman has revealed in a new interview. Jonney Shih has dropped hints about a potential Eee Pad before, but now we can expect a pair, and when it comes to the OS they run, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Shih confirmed to Forbes in an interview this week that the Taiwanese tech giant has plans for “at least two” tablets this year. He told the publication that one of the Asus tablets will run Google’s Chrome OS or Android, while the other will likely run Windows. “Asus always tries to address the open camps of Google and Microsoft,” he said, in a swipe at the iPad’s closed operating system.

Asus: Tablet exists, we have it in our labs

Asus’ head honcho went on to reveal that both Asus iPad rivals, especially a Google version, “will have a lot of media”. Although Shih gave no launch date, rumours have pointed to a debut at the Computex tradeshow in June before.

If and when Asus cracks the nascent tablet market, it won’t stop there either, with Shih declaring that he wants Asus to invade consumers’ homes. “We’re interested in making anything that can improve your life experience,” he said. Even if Asus fails to top the iPad, perhaps you’ll still be able to look forward to an Eee washing machine.
