iPad owners will have to pay for future iPad OS updates. Small print in the iPad legal documentation suggests that Apple won’t be giving iPad owners the free updates that iPhone fans have got used to. Are you prepared to pay for future iPad software upgrades?

Deep in the iPad software licensing info which includes the usual terms and conditions for using apps like Google Maps and Youtube, Apple reveals that you’ll get one free major iPad software update before you have to pay:

“Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped…on your iPad, for free.

If your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software…up to and including iPad 4.x.”

Apple also states that those software updates and releases may not include all the new features added for newer iPad models.

iPod Touch owners are used to having to pay for major iPhone OS updates while iPhone owners have historically received updates for free. It’s possible that paying for iPad software updates could be followed by the same deal for iPhone 4.0.

Should Apple be able to charge you for iPad software updates? Let us know.

in my opinion it should be similar to the iphone and ipod touch if you have a 3g contract (i know its not suppose to be on contract just a monthly ongoing payment) you should get the updates for free but if you are wifi only pya seems simple enough.

All the iPhone updates I’ve seen have actually benefited Apple as much as iPhone owners. Every new update means Jailbreakers are sent back to square one. That’s a fringe benefit, but with iPad apps seeming more expensive than iPhone apps, that means Apple stands to lose out on a bigger slice of revenue once Jailbreaking’s allowed, and owners can install anything they like.

I’ll have bought an iPad, I’ll have bought a few apps what’s £10 or so every couple of months to keep it up to date! Let them charge, if the update doesn’t have anything worth paying for then wait for the next one.
