Could the iPhone 4.0 pack a super widescreen for watching video on without the little black bars? That’s what the latest leak online would suggest, showing what’s alleged to be the new front panel for Apple’s next mobile. We whipped out the ruler and found out the dimensions it’s rocking, so read on for the details.
The iPhone 4.0 is still far from official, but a new video has popped up online showing what’s claimed to be the front panel screen of the mystery mobile, from a trusted source and supplier. We’d take it with a pinch of salt, but if it is destined for the iPhone 4.0, it could have some interesting ramifications.
Take a look at the supposed iPhone 4.0 panel pictured next to an iPhone 3G. It’s longer and narrower, and while that gives us hope that the iPhone 4.0 will be thinner, the real revelation is the display size: we’ve zoomed up close, made some measurements, and it appears to a 16:9 display.

If legit, that means the iPhone 4.0 will be able to play television shows in their original aspect ratio, and movies with much smaller letter boxing or cropping, as the current iPhone display is a 3:2 affair.
That’s great news if you plan on watching stacks of movies, but it might also make web browsing much more of a chore, as it could mean fewer words can be squeezed in per line in column view.
