Nokia N900 apps: top 10

Nokia N900Nokia N900 apps can give your phone a welcome power up but if you don’t have time to scour the Ovi Store for the best Maemo friendly apps, fear not.

We’ve strapped on our explorer’s gear, dusted off our magnifying glass and gone out in search of the Earth’s best Nokia N900 apps.

Want the skinny on the best apps for Nokia’s touchscreen tablet? Read on for our pick of the 10 best Nokia N900 apps…

1 FM Radio Player
Curiously, the Nokia N900 has an FM radio chip but no pre-installed app to put it to work. The FM Radio Player app papers over that gap, giving your Nokia N900 an FM Tuner. Like lots of radio apps for mobiles it uses your headphone cable as an antenna so you can’t  listen to Radio 4 on the bus through the N900’s speaker like an oddly intellectual teenager.

2 gPodder Podcast Client
Your Nokia N900 has 32GB of on board storage which space for oodles of audio. Adding a 3.5mm headphone jack to that hefty amount of space, makes the Nokia N900 a perfect place to stash your favourite podcasts. gPodder Podcast Client lets you do that with ease, grabbing podcasts over 3G or WiFi and letting you simply subscribe to them from within the app. There’s also a PC app which to sync podcasts to your Nokia N900 at home.

3 eCoach
eCoach turns your Nokia N900 into a pocket sports trainer. Strap your Nokia N900 to your arm or stick it in your pocket and it’ll keep track of your speed, distance and heart rate (if you connect a compatible monitor) during your run or workout. There’s a built-in training diary which saves your progress and lets you set goals. eCoach also supports Open Street Map, Google Maps and Virtual Earth to show routes from the N900 app.

4 Firefox for Maemo
Firefox for Maemo transfers the features you love in the Firefox desktop version to your Nokia N900, without losing any of at Mozilla-powered character you’ve come to adore.

It’ll sync all your tabs, passwords and bookmarks from your home computer to your Nokia N900 and has the tabbed browsing you’re used to from the desktop version. You can also install Firefox add-ons.

5 Skype
Skype on your Nokia N900 lets you make Skype-to-Skype calls for free via WiFi and free on 3G depending on your data tariff.

Your Skype contacts are integrated with your Nokia N900 phonebook with their online status shown so you’ll know if they’re available for a chat. You can also use Skype on the N900 to start an IM chat if a fully-fledged Skype call isn’t convenient.

6 Bounce Evolution
If you’re after a game that will show off the graphical grunt of your Nokia N900, try Bounce Evolution. It’s a cracking little 3D game where you control a ball and send it bouncing around different race courses, grabbing power ups along the way.

Like our beloved Super Monkey Ball, Bounce Evolution uses the Nokia N900’s accelerometer to control the ball, so you may get some odd looks as you wave it around on the train.

7 Documents To Go Viewer Edition
As much as you try to escape from work, sometimes you just can’t avoid it. Documents To Go Viewer Edition turns your Nokia N900 into a window into the world of your work with the ability to view Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files right there.

It also lets you search your files and zoom in on the important bits. If you need your Nokia N900 to become a portable editing device too, you can stump up $9.99 for the fully fledged version of the app.

8 OMWeather
OMWeather lets you ditch the TV weather folk and turn on your Nokia N900 instead. The OMWeather widget automatically grabs updates from the nearest weather station to keep you clued up on whether its all blue skies and cute little clouds or brewing up a thunderstorm.

The OMWeather widget will let you know what the weather’s like right now but also more usefully bring up to 10 days of predictions to your Nokia N900.

9 BlueMaemo
This one’s all about the cool tricks it lets you do. By allowing your Nokia N900 to mimic loads of other Bluetooth enabled kit, the BlueMaemo Nokia N900 app can take over from Bluetooth keyboards, mice, control Windows Media PCs and Macbooks and, best of all, temporarily replace your PS3 controller.

Now we’re not sure it’s worth trying to use for online gaming marathons but if you need to just navigate the menus or input text, the keyboard on the N900 will make that substantially easier. Plus, you can wow your tech savvy friends.

10 PixelPipe Media Gateway
One of the easiest ways to turn your Nokia N900 into a content flinging powerhouse is by installing PixelPipe Media Gateway. The app makes it easy to post photos, videos, text and audio to over a 100 different sites with the key ones – Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Youtube and Myspace – all included.

Sure, it’s not a dedicated client for any of them but it means you can make the most of the N900’s cracking camera and killer keyboard to share things speedily.
