Amazon could be priming its own game download service to go with its Kindle eBook, MP3 and movie rental platforms, according to one expert. Could it steamroll Steam?

Valve is steaming ahead with Steam for Mac, and ramping up its plans to grab even more of the game download market, but it could soon have a new competitor in the shape of online giant Amazon. That’s according to an analyst at investment bank Lazard Capital, Colin Sebastian.

He flags up a large number of job postings pointing to Amazon making a jump into the game download market: “Our periodic checks of job postings uncovered a search by Amazon in the video game category to help implement a new digital distribution platform.”

“As in other segments of digital media, we expect Amazon to pursue new opportunities as an aggregator of online games, similar to Steam (PC), BigPoint (browser) and others,” he wrote.

Steam for Mac arrives

There’s nothing official at this point, but with Amazon dabbling in almost every other form of digital media in one country or another, it would come as no surprise.

Would you pay for downloads from Amazon? Are you hooked on indie games on Steam, or waiting for OnLive‘s game streaming to come to the UK? Let us know what you think.
