Sony PSP owners are unlikely to get a taste of handheld gaming any time soon. Sony marketing director, John Koller, has responded to the announcement of the Nintendo 3DS by cheering Sony PS3 3D gaming but dismissing 3D on the go.

The Nintendo 3DS might be gearing up to bring 3D games to the little screen but Sony isn’t convinced. Koller told IGN that he thinks 3D is great but it’s for consoles not handhelds like the PSP. He says: “The amount of interest in 3D…is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on the PS3 and we’re going to concentrate our efforts there.”

Koller says the Nintendo 3DS is “an interesting move” but claims it has got its target audience wrong, “8 and 9-year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”

Sony is putting a lot of time and effort behind promoting Sony 3D TV and 3D games on the PS3 so it makes sense that Koller would promote that.

But don’t be surprised if Sony does end up putting 3D into a future PSP. If the Nintendo 3DS takes off, we could see a repeat of the Playstation Move vs Nintendo Wii battle.
