BBC iPlayer has been available on Freesat boxes since late last year, but for the first time, you’ll now be able to stream Auntie on demand without the need for an ethernet cable. TechniSat’s just turned on BBC iPlayer for its Wi-Fi infused HDFS Freesat box, letting you take your set top box off the leash – or at least away from the router.

TechniSat has just announced it’s pushing out a software update today, bringing BBC iPlayer to its HDFS Freesat box. That’s good news for anyone with the high definition PVR in their living room, but it also marks another first: Freesat BBC iPlayer streaming over Wi-Fi, using the STB’s Wi-Fi adapter.

That’s a real boon for anyone who doesn’t have ethernet cables growing out of the skirting boards like weeds, and means you can stream BBC iPlayer to your HDTV no matter where it is in the house. You can still use hardwiring too of course, but it’s good to have the option there.

The TechniSat HDFS Freesat box and media streamer is already on sale, and the update bringing BBC iPlayer through the red button on the remote should be available shortly.
