Freesat, the free to air high definition rival to Freeview HD, has stormed past a million sales in Blighty, the Beeb and ITV joint venture has revealed. But can it keep up the momentum while Freeview HD rolls out, and Sky pushes on with 3D?
Freesat announced today that more than a million Freesat boxes have been sold since launch in May 2008, with a massive 250,000 sale boost over Christmas and New Year pushing it past the milestone number.
That’s a huge amount for a service which requires a satellite, and given that government estimates put the number of households at around 26.2m, means Freesat now resides in nearly four percent of homes in the country.

Can Freesat keep the pace up though? Freeview HD is beginning to roll out across the country, and while Freesat boasts BBC iPlayer as standard, its two HD channels are starting to feel a limited, since Freeview HD offers both (BBC and ITV HD) and will also launch Channel 4 HD soon. The race is on: can Freeview HD get to a million before Freesat hits two?
