The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10‘s snazzy Android skin has been ported to the trusty HTC Magic, before Sony Ericsson’s first Google phone has even gone on sale. Fancy a bit of that Timescape social networking action? Soon you may not need to upgrade to get it: read on for the first video.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 isn’t out until next month, and the X10 Mini and Mini Pro not until May, but one crafty hacker has managed to shoehorn Sony Ericsson’s clever UX skin on to the year old HTC Magic, as you can see in the video below.

It’s actually a port of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro build rather than the flasghip X10, but as you can see from the boot up, that instantly recognisable blue homescreen is there already, if not at the right resolution yet, and the coder in questions reports that it’s blazingly fast.

Unfortunately, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 software isn’t fully functional on it just yet, and there’s no sign of Timescape or Mediascape working successfully yet, but this is just the start: it’s only a matter of time before someone cracks it.

Is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 software enough of a reason to keep your HTC Magic on Android 1.6, instead of rushing ahead into souped up Android 2.1 territory? Check it out in action in the video below, and decide for yourself.

I’ve had the Xperia x10 for three days now, and it has already packed up working. It simply will not turn on anymore. I put it on charge last night, and this morning i noticed it was turned off. I tried to turn it on and it simply won’t turn on. There is no indicator to tell me whether it is the phone or the charger that is at fault. So, three days in it is already presenting problems that could be significant.

In terms of the rest of its functionality, the new Android OS isn’t that amazing – how on earth do you set the sms message ringtone notification to a new ringtone that is not one of the standard inbuilt ringtones? I’ve downloaded audio clips and wanted to use one as the text message alert sound, but no, it won’t let that happen. So that is not to great.

The general navigation is a bit ropey as well. Some options can only be located by an alternate key sequence – a bit like Office 2007, the changed approach threw old users and left people wondering where half of the functions had gone to.

On the plus side, the screen is great, the handset looks great, and the resolution is good. The interface is not awesome, but okay, and does most things well enough. Can i recommend it? – not sure yet, at present, this phone is a risk – it really depends if the current fault with my X10 handset turns out to be a common problem, or i just got a freak handset.
