Google TV may not be official just yet, but the people behind Boxee, our favourite media juggling TV software, are already welcoming it with open arms, declaring that an Android revolution in set top boxes is a “great opportunity.”
Boxee may have its own Boxee Box for easy media streaming on the way, but the start up wants to be on as many devices as possible too, and with that in mind, Andrew Kippen, vice president of marketing at Boxee, has penned his thoughts on Google TV already.
Speaking about the potential Android fuelled Google TV project, believed to also include Sony and Intel, he told Boxee mailing list subscribers in an email: “We hope the system will lead the way towards an open set-top box market, where applications such as Boxee can be downloaded and installed by users easily. We think this is a great opportunity.”
Boxee understandably wants to be made available legitimately on as many platforms as possible, and with the option for paid shows coming later this year, we’d love to be able to get the service on as many screens as possible. Even if it won’t ever catch iTunes for content, Boxee on Google TV could still spur Apple to finally start innovating with Apple TV, which Apple execs have branded merely a “hobby” for years. Could Google TV prove them wrong? We hope so, but we’ll have to wait on a formal Google TV announcement to find out just what is what.
