The iPad went up for pre-order in the US last Friday, and the orders have been flying in, but not just from within the fifty states. Apple’s online store has been barraged with UK orders too, to the point where one import service has had to stop taking orders!

We told you how Bundle Box would allow you to ship an iPad to the UK weeks ahead of schedule, but if you were planning on doing just that, you’ll have to wait a bit: the company has told us it’s had to put iPad orders on hold temporarily while it processes current purchases.

iPad pre-orders: one sold every second

Despite the border obstacles (Apple US only ships to US postal addresses), the iPad pre-orders have come through at a rapid pace too. From Friday afternoon through to Sunday iPad orders came through at a rate of one a minute, dropping to one very five minutes on Sunday before surging once more on Monday morning.

While Apple has been keeping schtum on which iPad is proving most popular, leaving analysts to make the estimates, Bundlebox has revealed to us that 55 percent of its UK orders have been for the 16G Wi-Fi only model, a quarter for the 32GB iPad, and 17 percent for the 64GB Wi-Fi. Two percent of people are taking their chances with a 32GB iPad 3G model, and one percent for the 64GB iPad 3G, so we hope the networks come through with the right micro SIM cards if you count yourself amongst them.

Bundlebox’s CEO, Andre Schmidt, assures it’ll open up for pre-orders once the current batch are processed, so it’s not too late to nab an iPad early.

Which one did you go for Tim? We’re sitting here twiddling our thumbs waiting for ours too!

16gb wifi… I have a 32gb 3gs that’s jailbroken so I can tether with MiFi. I think 16Gb will be ok for what I need as I dont want it for music or films. Its going to be mainly a web browser, a few select games, PDF viewer and Music Tool.

The story i got today when i ordered one yesterday was “Apple doesnt not work with forwarding boxes’(Bundle Box) and they refunded me!! I think Bundlebox have bigger problems here judging by the statement from Apple.

Hey Oli, thanks for flagging that up. We asked Bundle Box about it and were told you should try using the BuyForMe service on Bundle Box since Apple is rejecting the order based on your credit card deets (address, email). That should solve your problems and get you an early iPad!

I’m hoping for a 32GB Wifi+3G model, but it does depend on what Micro SIM offers we get over here. Pay As You Go is what I’m after, a bit like what the US are getting from AT&T for the iPad. If there isn’t a good offer, then the Wifi-only model would do and I can get a Pay As You Go Mifi thing from 3. I’d rather have built-in 3G so Push works, so Maps can use current location, and so I don’t have to carry the Mifi around. But since I’m already paying a lot each month for my iPhone, I’d rather have the option to use the 3G on the iPad only when I need to.

So I held off from ordering now through these websites. Firstly, if the 3G deals here are good, then there’s no advantage because the US aren’t getting their 3G models until the end of April, just like us. Secondly, I won’t know if I want the Wifi-only model or not until we know more about the UK 3G deals, and by then it may be closer to the UK release date anyway.

This leaves me wondering why the hell ANYONE ordered 3G models from the US to the UK. We get Wifi-only and the 3G models all at the same time, released at the end of April. In the US, they are getting Wifi-only at the start of April and 3G at the end of April, exactly when we get it. So if I now wait and order a 3G model from Apple UK, I’ll probably get it at the same time (or even quicker!) than those who just ordered through these websites. Makes no sense to me…

Seems Bundlebox won’t be shipping anymore atall:

“Unfortunately last night we hit the max of our ability to jump over the many hurdles that Apple has put in place to prevent Apple fans outside the USA getting an IPad early. This means that we have stopped taking and processing pre-orders because we don’t want to put our current orders with Apple at risk.”

    disaster!!!!!!! :(

Thanks for the tip – we’re calling them now to find out more!

      • TurinX

Cool, would love to know what they say, and if there is any other way to get one early here in the UK!

        • http://www.electricpig.co.uk Ben Sillis

I’ve just got off the phone with a spokesperson: Apple is throwing up road blocks to stop imports this way, so for the time being Bundle Box is indeed not taking any more pre-orders. However, the company absolutely stands by ones already placed, and assures us anyone who has pre-ordered through them will get their iPad.

Apple US are total idiots…. when will these guys learn. All the UK guys wanna do is buy there product….

Couldn’t agree more – although it has to be said, they haven’t blocked the orders that’ve gone through, and they likely have concerns that people will import them, could find a fault or problem, and then try to return them to bemused Apple staff in the UK. Not long to wait really… that said, mine should be arriving on Monday.

Has there been a definately price fixed for the UK? I just want to buy it and start downloading hundreds of apps.

    • http://www.electricpig.co.uk Ben Sillis

Nope, no known price just yet Lee! Hold tight, we’re itching to find out too.
