Virgin Media is set to beam the Sci Fi HD channel aboard HDTVs across the land from next month. The news comes just days after Virgin Media announced it had inked a deal to broadcast Film 4 HD exclusively, and is another string in its bow in the battle against Sky HD.
Starting from early April, just prior to rebranding to SyFy HD on 13 April, the Sci Fi Channel HD will begin airing on Virgin Media set top boxes. The Sci Fi Channel HD will offer old classics such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer alongside the new series Human Target, which starts next month, and the UK premiere of V.
The Sci Fi Channel HD is the sixth HD channel Virgin Media has announced this year, after Eurosport, Discovery, E4 and Film 4 HD, and helps it stretch the gap between it and free to air rivals Freesat and Freeview HD. But subscription giant Sky has just announced plans to take its roster of high definition stations to 50 by the end of the year, so we expect there’ll be plenty more announcements to come still if Virgin Media wants to keep up.
If you’re a Virgin Media XL TV customer, Sci Fi Channel HD will be free of charge on launch.
Out April | £TBC | Virgin Media and Sci Fi
