An AutoTrader iPhone app has just hit the App Store showroom floor, and like the Amazon app, it lets you snap shots with the iPhone camera to look up models. This time though, it does it with licence plates, and deals you out the nearest motor matches on sale too. We’ve taken it for a quick spin, so read on for our first impressions.

While the AutoTrader iPhone app isn’t the first augmented reality price checker to land on phones, it’s one of the most useful we’ve tried, purely because you’re so likely to see a car you’re interested in while out on the street. You can take a photo to store and check up for later, but with the iPhone’s 3G connection, the AutoTrader iPhone app will let you look up average prices and nearby sellers right there and then too.

Google Shopper Android app hits the Android market

We tested out the AutoTrader iPhone app and it really does work as quickly and handily as advertised: once you’ve grabbed a shot, you simply pinch zoom and crop the snap leaving only the licence plate, it reads it, even at an angle, and presto, prices and information on the car make, model, year and specs appear.

Once you’re done you can save the model to keep an eye on price in the Garage tab, and the AutoTrader iPhone app can use either your postcode or the GPS signal to show the nearest models you can snatch up.

The AutoTrader iPhone app is on the App Store now and free, so if you’re on the hunt for a second hand motor and have an iPhone, this is a must have download.
