Nokia could develop a self-charging phone. A new Nokia patent application describes a handset that will charge itself using energy from your movement as you walk. It sounds like those watches that stay juiced up using the kinetic energy from swinging your arms but could mean an end to overnight charges.

The Nokia patent application describes a phone with a “Piezoelectric Kinetic Energy Harvester” built-in. It basically means the self-charging Nokia would place the battery inside a frame which would sit in a second frame and move as you moved generating a charge in piezoelectric elements.

While the self-charging phone could mean your future Nokia would no longer be reliant on regular stops at a plug, it would also make for a larger device. You’d also need to do a lot of dancing around to power an energy guzzling smart phone like the Nokia N900.

Still, since the Nokia self-charging technology is simply part of a patent application at the moment there’s no guarantee that it will ever make it into the phone in your pocket.

Nokia has been investigating new power technology for mobiles for a while. Plans for a Nokia device that could draw power from its surroundings popped up recently.

Would you be willing to have your Nokia rattling around in your pocket if it meant you needn’t bother with plugging in a charger ever again? And make sure you check out Nokia Terminal Mode, Nokia’s plan for your car’s mobile touting future.
