Virgin Media will add Channel 4’s Film 4 HD and E4 HD channels this summer. It’s bad news for Freeview HD as Film 4 HD will be exclusive to Virgin Media. Is it fair that licence fee payers lose out on Film 4 HD?
Virgin Media hasn’t announced a firm launch date for Film 4 HD and E4 HD but promises that they will be available to customers with its Virgin Media XL TV package by the summer. The new channels will be added free.
What will Virgin Media customers get from the new channels? Film 4 HD will carry films in the channel’s new season which will include Slumdog Millionaire, Mike Leigh’s Happy Go Lucky and Ken Loach’s surreal Eric Cantona flick, Looking for Eric. E4 HD bring you shows like Skins, Hollyoaks and Glee.
Though Channel 4 is financed by advertising revenue, it is still publicly owned and a considered a public service broadcaster. Film 4 is currently available free-to-air on Freeview. For Channel 4 HD, you’ll need to fork out for Virgin Media.
Freeview HD is set to get Channel 4 HD this summer, It currently broadcasts BBC HD and ITV 1 HD. If you’re thinking of jumping to Freeview HD, check out of our Humax HD-Fox T2 Freeview HD box review and news of the newly released Sony Freeview HD TV models.
