iPod, iPhone and Mac appearances in films made Apple the biggest tech brand. An iPod or Mac made an appearance in 18 of the 44 films that topped the US box office in 2009. That figure doesn’t take into account the host of other films that featured Apple cameos but didn’t hit the top spot. Is Apple tech’s biggest film star?
Apple’s fan boy status in films actually took a dip in 20009 though as it appeared in 50% of box office number ones in 2008. iPods, Mac and iMac users in TV were also all over the place with product placement tracking service Nielsen IAG noting 62 occurrences of Apple in shows like 30 Rock in one month.
Still, iPods, iMacs and Macbooks appeared in more number one films than any other brand, beating out Ford and Pepsi which had held the top spot since 2001.
Despite that fact that it won’t hit the shelves until later this month, the iPad has already popped up on screen in the hands of Stephen Colbert and an iPad 24 appearance is on the cards. Meanwhile, the iPhone recently made it onto a couch gag on The Simpsons.
Apple previously had a webpage to highlight the many starring roles given to iPhone, iPods and Mac in films but it has seemingly shut it down. Perhaps it’ll dedicate a page to the forthcoming Steve Jobs play.
