New Sony Ericsson Walkman phones are on the way, according to the company’s UK chief. Sony Ericsson might be pushing smartphones big time in 2010, but it’s not forgotten all you mobile music fans, so read on for what to expect.

Sony Ericsson’s UK and Ireland manager Nathan Vautier sat down with Mobile Today recently to talk about the company’s plans for the year ahead. As Sony Ericsson really pushes smartphones for the first time beyond the odd Windows Mobile handset, it’s cutting the number of models released down to 26. But in streamlining its range, it’s not shelved new Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, not by a long shot.

“There will be a number of Walkman products. Some of these will be better suited to prepay, so we will still have relevance in that segment from the middle of 2010 onwards; they will be around the £100 mark,” he said.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini: hands-on!

It’s good to know that new Sony Ericsson Walkman phones haven’t been forgotten in the (slow) jump to Android, as one of Sony’s strongest brands while a PlayStation phone remains nothing but a dream. Other than the cheap as chips W205, we’ve seen little in the way of new Sony Ericsson Walkman phones over the last year, and we’ve not seen a hint of a replacement for the flagship Sony Ericsson Walkman W995, now nine months old.

We’ll let you know as and when any new Sony Ericsson Walkman phones make their debut in public, but in the meantime, check out what else it has planned in our Sony Ericsson Mobile World Congress booth tour.

Glad SE is getting back to Walkman – the W995 is still the best handset on the market by far. Its not perfect (no phone is ) but its not far off. However I dont like the sound of Low end Walkmans – It should stay a premium brand and this move will de-value it.

The W995 is great, but it’s too expensive for something lacking a smartphone OS. I’d very much like to see more Walkman phones though – the X Series Walkman (not a phone) was brilliant, and if Sony Ericsson can draw from that design and put Android on there, it’ll be on to a winner I reckon.
