The Apple iPad is the most anticipated gadgets in ages so it’s no surprise that scammers on Twitter and Facebook are using it to lure people into giving away their information. It seems there’s a sucker born every minute and most of them want an iPad…
On Facebook, pages asking people to join things like the iPad Research team get you sign up as fan, invite all your friends (that’s vital) and complete a quiz that grabs your contact details. The final part of that is handing over your mobile number.
But guess what? Once the scam artists have grabbed your digits they’ll start signing you up to seriously expensive premium rate mobile services.
Similar scams are also running on Twitter with fraudsters adding whatever hashtags are most popular at the time (including the #chile tag related to the recent Chilean earthquake).
The iPad isn’t out until late-March and Apple doesn’t go in for public beta testing with its products so every single one of these offers on Twitter and Facebook is a scam. We know you know that but tell your less tech savvy friends and point them towards the Sophos video above.
