Call of Duty has a third developer with Dead Space creators Sledgehammer Games prepping a new game for 2011. What does that mean for Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward and the much rumoured Call of Duty: Vietnam?

There’s been a bit of turmoil at Infinity Ward, home of Modern Warfare 2 and the rumoured source of a Call of Duty MMO, with the studio’s heads leaving. But it looks like Activision’s got another developer working on a Call of Duty game.

Sledgehammer Games, the studio created by Activision late last year and headed up by the creators of third-person horror game Dead Space, is now working on a Call of Duty game. While Activision promises it will arrive in 2011, there’s no clue yet on the setting.

Treyarch is continuing to develop another Call of Duty title set to appear in the autumn which is most likely to be Call of Duty: Vietnam. We’ve seen plenty of rumours about the Vietnam War based title, most recently with news of Call of Duty: Vietnam voice auditions.

While there’s been uproar at Infinity Ward, Activision CEO Mike Griffith confirmed that it’s still working on downloadable content for Modern Warfare. He said: “In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release , we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players.”

New geographies definitely sounds like Call of Duty: Vietnam and new genres suggests all that talk of a Call of Duty MMO could be right on the money. But what do you want from the Call of Duty franchise? More Modern Warfare or a back-to-basics approach?

They should do Modern Warfare 3. Modern Warfare 2′s storyline was left way too open from the ending to the American soldiersperparing to go to Russia. If they don’t make Modern Warfare 3, I, and many others, will be very disappointed. With Infinity Ward breaking down and Sledgehammer Games takng over, I am really afraid of the direction CoD will go. Also, Activision is quoted as saying they are trying to turn CoD from a shooter to an action/adventure soo…scary shit.

I would have thought it was inveitable – Modern Warfare 2 was touted as the biggest media launch ever. They’d be mad to miss out on cashing in a few times more on that (Though I wasn’t that blown away by the single player, just felt like Time Crisis where you could move a little bit).
