BBC 6Music is to be closed in large scale spending cuts at the Beeb, as reported last week. The BBC director general Mark Thompson has just announced the plans to staff: read on for what else haas been hit, and what this means for you.
Word broke last week that digital stations BBC 6Music and BBC Asian Network would be killed off in a bid to save money, along with a large chunk of the BBC’s website. Now it’s official, with Thompson telling staff the stations will go, along with websites BBC Switch and BBC Blast. The plans will still have to be approved by the BBC Trust however, so you’ll have time to register any opposition during the consultation period at the BBC Trust website.
Thompson also reportedly told staff that 90p of every £1 paid in licence fees will in future be spent on programming.
The story is still developing at the moment, but #savebbc6music is now trending across Twitter at number two in the UK, and we’d expect it to shoot higher still.
Should BBC 6Music go? Would you rather see your money spent on a smaller website and better TV and radio programming? Have your say in the comments section below.
