BBC 6Music, the BBC Asian Network and much of Auntie’s website could be shuttered, according to a new report. The BBC has yet to issue an official statement, but the threat of closure of the digital music station has sparked uproar online already, with calls to save BBC 6Music trending on Twitter.

The Times report, published this morning, states that BBC director-general Mark Thompson will reveal plans to kill the two digital stations and half of the BBC website next month in a bid to save money. Spending on broadcast rights for sports coverage will also be capped at 8.5 percent of the licence fee.

Within minutes, a backlash in support of BBC 6Music broke out on Twitter, and at the time of writing, the #savebbc6music hashtag is the top trend on the microblogging service in the UK, with “BBC 6Music” at number five, and “BBC Asian Network” at number nine.

Fans of BBC 6Music are already calling for solutions to save the station, pointing out that “BBC 6Music could be entirely funded (£6m a year) for less than Chris Moyles salary (£6.3m).” The Facebook group Save BBC 6Music has also swelled to 59,656 members.

Should the BBC axe BBC 6Music? Does George Lamb deserve to go or is the Beeb killing off the only source of original new music on the airwaves? Jot your two cents down in the comment below.

Update: contrary to the quote above, Chris Moyles actually receives a salary of far less than £6.3m,  it was £630,000 prior to a pay cut in November 2009. Still, hardly chicken feed.

Problem with internet campaigns they’re usually completely inaccurate…Moyles’ old salary was only £630,000 a year and he’s taken a 25% cut since his contract renewal last July!

the point isn’t comparisons with anybody’s wages, or even vendettas against George Lamb (who’ll soon move full-time to The Clothes Show or whatever anyway), it’s the number of people who want to save 6music and the fact that it plays so much music not touched by any other station

Well said Craig. Personally, I thought the BBC Trust were supposed to guard against the Beeb openly challenging commercial broadcasters with the same sort of content. Rather, they should innovate, challenge in new ways and broadcast in ways that aren’t commercially viable otherwise. 6 Music and Asian Network both do that very well. 5 Live Sports Xtra, however, and 1 Xtra for that matter, do nothing more than increase the BBC’s strength against the likes of Capital, Heart and Talksport. This all seems very unfair.

My point remains about inaccurate nonsense that perpetuates these sort of campaigns and how a Facebook group is suddenly a valid way of measuring public opinion.

The hardcore listeners may have a point but the masses retweeting a message/adding a hashtag or signing the inevitable (and tedious) on line petition is just lazy and usually pointless and takes no real commitment to ‘the cause’.

If all the people who’ve suddenly grown a deep affection for 6 Music had been listening it might be a whole different story.

Of course minority interests need to be catered for but where a service is unsustainable they should look to include areas of the programming elsewhere i.e Asian Network on 1Xtra and 6 Music on R2…easy and cost effective.

To Dave in Dorset: Radio stations don’t cost that much to run when compared to television. A well made doc will cost a four figure fee in radio, in tv they cost five maybe six figures. If the BBC want to save money they should stop making things like Bargain Hunt and Doctors.

BBC 6music is the an invaluable resource for orginal alternative music. It has engaging and informed broadcasters and their enthusiasm is infectious. The BBC radio stations still set the benchmark to which all others aspire. Please look to curb the spending in other fields and leave one of the few stations which does not patronise its loyal fanbase. The radio sets it apart from other media networks. I urge the BBC not to dismantle 6 Music. The corporation would be poorer without it. How many more steps before the BBC becomes as prosaic as all the others?

Moyles does not earn £6.5 million. Try more like £600,000 or less when you take his pay cut into account.

I realise the difference in cost….Moyles’ salary is the same (or less) than a one hour primetime BBC 1 drama!

I merely suggested that the end of 6 Music and Asian Network does not automatically mean the end of certain programming. Specialist music programming could go across some of the remaining networks.

I’ve found though that a lot of these people on Twitter are more interested in making jibes about Moyles etc than promoting the good points that 6 Music has to offer.
