Microsoft used to let Windows Mobile nestle in any old handset but the shiny new Windows Phone 7 Series is far too special for that. This time Microsoft is defining the hardware specs it’ll require from manufacturers before they can get their hands on Windows Mobile 7 Series.

Rumours suggest that Microsoft will offer up three different chassis specifications. The first Windows Phone  7 Series hardware design broke cover at Mobile World Congress. It features an 800×480 capacitive touch screen, an accelerometer, FM radio, a 3.5mm headphone jack, GPS and a 5MP camera.

Chassis two is reportedly set to feature a similar feature set as the Windows Phone 7 Series hardware we’ve seen so far but squeeze in a slide-out keyboard too. A third specification is also rumoured but no real details have slipped out yet other than the notion that it may use a candybar form factor.

Microsoft’s fixed requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series will mean far less variety among Windows touting handsets but defining the screen resolution and features will make life a lot easier for developers. Previously, Windows Mobile developers had to struggle with loads of different set ups.
